Help with Java Assignent

post #1 of 8
Thread Starter
Currently working on my assignment. The current objective that I am working on is to read data from a file, and store it in array for access later on.
When I try to print the objects in my array however I get the memory location of my array.
I have added variables so I know that the objects are being read correctly, and I believe it is either a looping problem or a printing problem.

This is the input I am testing:
12000 10 10.80 daily
2000 5 7.30 quarterly
10000 3 5.55 monthly
2000 1 4.50 daily
5000 10 9.15 monthly
Its a mix of ints, doubles and strings.

Please, I think the problem is simple, just something I am overlooking, but if anyone can help me with this part so I have viable information to test my other classes I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm sorry I read your post twice but I still can't understand your problem.

I just have one thing to say about your code. why are you doing this?
Code:
Scanner s = new Scanner(new FileReader("CD-data.txt"));

I assume your reading data from a file. so why not read the data one by one to a buffer and then add them to an array.
Code:
FileInputStream fin;

  // Open an input stream
fin = new FileInputStream ("myfile.txt");

Read a line of text
buffer[0] = DataInputStream(fin).readLine() );

// Close our input stream
fin.close();

Thanks for the fast reply +rep.

However I see in your example it is reading by line.
In my program, although the information is given to me on a line, I have to split it into individual sections which is why I was using scanner because of the .hasNext() and .next() methods.

By using your example would I be able to achieve the same function?

What is your expected output?
Because you could add a toString() method on your CD class and that would fix the memory location being printed.

@op

sorry I was in software construction class.

ok I fixed your problem change this line to this.
Code:
CD array[] = new CD[100];

you can also try this
Code:
public class CDT {
    public static void main(String args[]) throws FileNotFoundException, IOException  {
        String buffer[] = new String[5];

FileInputStream fstream = new FileInputStream("CD-data.txt");

  DataInputStream in = new DataInputStream(fstream);
  BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(in));

  for(int i =0; i<buffer.length; i++)
  {
    buffer[i] = br.readLine();

  }
  in.close();

  for(int i =0; i<buffer.length; i++)
        System.out.print(buffer[i] + "\n");

    }
}

sorry i wish I could test the code for you but I have a class in 5min. I'm in college now biggrin.gif. my college net is slowwwwwwwwww.

Because you could add a toString() method on your CD class and that would fix the memory location being printed.

This is from the asg.doc:

"Write a Java program that will compute the accumulated value (principal plus interest earned), at yearly intervals, of any number of such CD's. Assume that a year always consists of exactly 365 days.

Output will be a series of 10 annual reports:

1. Reports will be in table form with appropriate column headings. There will be one row of the table for each active CD, which will include all the data along with the accumulated value and total interest earned to date.

2. Each report will also print the total accumulated value of all active CDs, and total interest earned by all active CD’s to date.

3. Once a CD reaches maturity, it will stop earning interest and will not appear in any future reports. E.g., a CD with a maturity of 5 years will appear in the reports for years one through five, but not thereafter."

I am simply trying to print my array to test if the information gathered is correct.

"3. Make sure your program is well documented and adheres to the style conventions discussed in class."

We never went over buffered reader in this class yet. I have in other classes but not this one :< So I dont think I can use it.

Well I totally revamped everything and got it to work.

If anyone is interested here are the different classes:

CDclass: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Code:
/**
 * @author G7
 */
public class CD {
    private int pr;
    private int ir;
    private double ma;
    private String cm;

    public CD(int pr, int ir, double ma, String cm)   {
        this.pr = pr;
        this.ir = ir;
        this.ma = ma;
        this.cm = cm;
    }

    public int getPR()  {
        return  pr;
    }
    public int getIR()  {
        return ir;
    }
    public double getMA()  {
        return ma;
    }
    public String getCM()  {
        return cm;
    }
    public double getAcc() {
        double Acc = 0;
        return Acc;
    }
}

CDlist: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Code:
import java.util.ArrayList;

/**
 * @author G7
 */
public class CDL {
    private ArrayList<CD> CDL;

    public CDL()    {
        CDL = new ArrayList<>();
    }
    public void addCD(CD c) {
        CDL.add(c);
    }
    public void printList() {
      for ( int i = 0 ; i < CDL.size() ; i++ )   {
         CD cd = CDL.get(i) ;
         System.out.println(cd.getPR() + "  " + cd.getIR() + "   " + cd.getMA() + "  " + cd.getCM()) ;
      }
   }
}

CDtester: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Code:
import java.io.FileReader;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.util.Scanner;

/**
 * @author G7
 */
public class CDT {
    public static void main(String args[]) throws IOException  {
        CDL CDT = new CDL();
        Scanner s = new Scanner(new FileReader("CD-data.txt"));

        while (s.hasNextLine()) {
            int pr = s.nextInt();
            int ir = s.nextInt();
            double ma = s.nextDouble();
            String cm = s.next();

            CD nextCD = new CD(pr,ir,ma,cm);
            CDT.addCD(nextCD);
        }
        CDT.printList();
    }
}

Also if anyone has hints on how to clean up the code a bit more I would appreciate it :]
