New to Water Cooling H100 & Overclocking

post #1 of 7
Thread Starter
Been upgrading my system bit by bit to get ready for an upgrade to ivy bridge when it comes out or maybe to one of the socket 2011 cpu's So i decided to take the step into water cooling so i decided to take the easy way out and get an Corsair H100 instead of building an entire system. After doing some research the H100 seemed like a good solution for me. Nice low temps and no need for maintenance and fewer parts to deal with.
Now my question, after having the system up and running for a month now the temps i am getting are not what i was expecting from what i have read before purchasing the H100. So i am wondering if it is the way my system is configured or maybe i have a unit that is not running the way it should and will need to be RMA'd. So below is how i have my system configured and the temps i am getting.

The PC
Intel I7 960
ASUS Sabertooth X58
12g Corsair Vengeance 3x4 triple channel
Corsair H100
Arctic Silver Ceramiqeu2 thermal compound, line method
WD 500gb Hard Disk
ASUS GTX560 TI TOP
OCZ ZX1000
Cooler Master HAF X case
The fans in my case are setup for positive airflow and are setup as follow:
two top mounted 200mm set to intake
front 230 mm set to intake
side panel 200mm set to intake
rear 140mm set to exhaust
The fans on the H100 are mounted to the underside of the rad in a pull config with the two top 200mm's blowing down onto the top of the rad.

The temps
Ambient temp is 9c
This is with the H100 set to performance mode running Prime95 and temps taken thru ASUS PC Probe
Stock 3.2ghz settings
Idle 36c, load is 59c
For overclocking i used the preset configs in the bios using the AI Tweaker
Crazy I7 3.6ghz profile {vcore1.43}
Idle 39c, load 65c
Crazy I7 3.85ghz {vcore 1.48}
Idle 40c, load 79c

From what i have read temps should be about 5c lower just for stock settings and for the overclocked profiles they should be lower by 5c to 10c or more than what i am seeing. To get my temps lower should i be looking at re-arranging my fans, perhaps ditching the two top mounted 200mm's in favor of a pair of 120mm' for a push/pull or am i just expecting to much from a I7 960? or are my temps in line with my system config. Any thoughts or insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Temps seem a tad high to me, possibly because I'm used to custom watercooling. Push is typically better on radiators so that might help by a few degrees. Push/pull also helps a little more as it doubles the effective static pressure.

Those are actually alright temps. Your cooler is working how it should. Let me explain, each CPU is different. So different CPUs may run hotter than others. The. CPUs these guys have are good cause they oc well and have low temps and good voltages. So it's your CPU running hot that's all. If your lucky you will get I good ivy bridge CPU with good temps and low voltages. So yea no need to worry wink.gif

Wait, have you tried pushing the fan speed button in the middle of the cooler?

I do understand and was expecting to be some variation between one CPU to another but from what i have read others were getting 4ghz and 4.2ghz in mid 50's at load and i am sitting at 3.85ghz with a 79c at load. I was just not expecting to see that wide of a variation from one 960 to another. If my temps were down around 60c i would be very happy with that. Also of note i have all four fans plugged into the H100 with the unit set to max/performance mode.

Try disabling Hyper Threading and see the temps drop dramatically thumb.gif
If you're not video editing / compressing / trans-coding a lot, it's not really a benefit to have 8 threads instead of 4.
