Tethering Question: ATT Samsung Captivate

Thread Starter
So I've been thinking somewhat of using my phone as a hot spot. I've been grandfathered into my original unlimited data plan from 5 or so years ago. I was wondering since I have an older unlimited date plan would I be able to use a tethering app or feature without being charged for it?

If I am allowed how do I ago about setting my Phone and/or PC up?

Thanks,

Obzz

I'm in the same situation with an old unlimited plan on my iPhone.

Unfortunately, AT&T won't apply this to tethering. You have to purchase a separate plan for that and it's around $30 for I think 5GB.

If you do go this route, you just set up your phone as a mobile hotspot through the settings (at least that's how it is with the iPhone), and then connect to it as you would to any other wifi signal.

Hope this helps,

Rich

installing a custom rom such as cyanogen mod 7 has wifi tethering built in.
it's as simple as turning it on and setting your security encryption.

if you're comfortable putting a custom rom on your phone it is the easiest and most profitable route.
Helpful Guide.

These. I have an HTC Inspire on AT&T, and have CyanogenMOD on it, so I use my hotspot for when I'm using my iPad on the go. Also had a Captivate before this phone. Had a different ROM on it, but tethering still wprked without incident. Head over to http://www.xda-developers.com.

Wow! Thank you so much guys!

Which one of these mods would be best for laptop use? Basic surfing etc? I of course don't want any of those ridiculous charges. After all, I have been a customer for over 15 years...

Your two options are as follows.

root and rom your phone to use the wifi tether for free.
or get PDAnet which doesn't require root and you have to plug your phone onto the computer with USB.

I would root and rom, since you will gain much more then just wifi tether. Your phone will be faster too.

head over to XDA's forum to learn about rooting and putting a custom rom on.
