With both card you will have to disable MSAA because you will not be able to get good fps. 1.25GB will be enough for 1080p.

I have both 570's (2.5gb) and 480's in my rigs. I suggest picking up the 480 unless you find a good deal on the 2.5GB version of the 570. Clock for clock 480 is faster, overclocks well, and looks nicer.

If you can find a decent deal for 570 then go for it but GTX 480 is still a good performer its just a overheats more that's all.

I have a GTX 570 myself, but if I were OP I would get the GTX 480 instead, and buy a good aftermarket cooler for it. The 480 has more texture memory and has a stronger VRM setup. They perform about the same at stock, but the 480 could be overclocked pretty far with a good aftermarket cooler, without fear for it burning up.

The reference GTX 570 have a pretty weak VRM setup, and have been known to blow up when overclocked. My Gigabyte GTX 570 will overclock to about 850 GPU at around 1.050v. I don't feel comfortable taking it any further.

Edit: I see that the GTX 570 linked to in OP is the MSI Twin Forzr III Power Edition/OC. I don't know if that one has the standard vrm setup though. Anyway, when I noticed this, and that the GTX 480 in OP was a reference model, I think I would have selected that MSI GTX 570 instead.

Is the stock cooler for the 480 good enough to overclock at all?

Yes, it is. A reference GTX 480 will get very hot, even at stock, but the clue is to change how the fan speeds act, according to different temperatures. MSI Afterburner is excellent to make a better fan preset.

My 480 is at 850/1700/1900 @ 1.063 V. I played bf 3 for an hour the other night and my temperatures never exceeded 70C at 75% fan thumb.gif

it is air cooled btw. 300r rocks for air cooling!

480 will get bashed for heat and a 570 gets bashed for VRM, both good for what you want.

Make up your mind based on whats important for you, for me it was price and the option to watercool at a later date which dealt with the heat.
