New computer studio sound equipment advice

I decided after my M-Audio AV-40 Mk. IIs started to die (left speaker's blown) after owning them 6 months that this time around I'm going to get higher quality studio equipment. I've going to be using to listen to lossless music, gaming, etc. I have a Asus Xonar Essence STX in my PC. No, I'm not planning running a studio with these - just looking for best sound quality from a 2.0 setup and listening to music/gaming. Thus far I'm thinking of the following...

Yamaha HS80M Studio Reference Monitor (X2)
SM Pro Audio Nano Patch + Passive Volume Attenuator
ART DTI

On top of that for connectivity for the equipment and the Asus Xonar Essence STX card in my PC...

Monster Cable Studio Link 500 Interconnect TRS (M) - TRS (M) (X2)
Monster StudioLink Interconnect RCA (M) - RCA (M) (X2)

As for budget, not an issue. Regarding music being played... a little bit of everything from rock to metal to rap to blues to bluegrass.

So any thoughts on this setup? Anything missing/vital needed/changed? Are there better passive volume controls and/or direct boxes? Can the direct box (ART DTI) be eliminated from the setup? Would I have to grab a Yamaha HS10W subwoofer (if the monitors are flat) or do I not need one for casual music playing?

looks like a good list. i've tested the HS80 before. they are good.

for casual music setup, you don't need a sub. the 8" woofer of the HS80's are enough already for that. and take note that monitors were made to be linear. so you might wanna grab a mixer instead of the Volume Attenuator to have analog EQ controls, Effects, Headphone Amp etc.

Ditch the monster cables. They don't do anything.

Anything will work. Home made. EBay. A thrift store. Monster is a gimmick.
