Q6600 Overclocking Air Cooling Help Needed!!!

Thread Starter
Ive recently decided to overclock my q6600. ive had it for almost 4 years now. however im new to overclocking. ive been reading around doing some research on my own on the basics of overclocking. the first problem im stuck in is cooling.. Im not sure what to replace with the stock cooler. i was considering a Cooler Master Hyper 212+ but after reading some more i felt as if it may not be enough?

i have a B3 stepping q6600 with an asus p5n-e sli motherboard. bios version 0608. using 2 x KVR-800D2N6/2G RAM with an xfx geforce 6800xt graphics cards.

i dont want to overclock extreme high. maybe aroundd 3.0 - 3.2 i can even live with just 3.0. my questions is which hsf should i replace the stock cooler with?

also my SB does not have a hs or fan on it. should i put one on? should i also replace the stock NB heatsink that came with the MB?

oh and also i have a Cooler Master Stacker 830 case. there is a case fan blowing out the back above the MB. another fan sucking air into the face from in front of the HD cage. and a third on the top of the case blowing air out.

if you fill out the add new rig to your signature it will be easier to help. And the B3 stepping Q6600 were horrid compared to scaling with voltage vs increase in mhz.

Most limiting factor in ur system will be the mobo, HSF, and memory in that order of importance.

South bridge will be fine but if north is getting too hot to touch right now modding a little 40mm fan on there should help alot.

Additionally the Q6600 B3 were notorious for their heat output. at the very most, you will get 3.4 if you are lucky. When put onto water the highest I have seen was 3.8 but with almost 1.6v (pretty bad).

If you get ahold of one, grab a nice Coolermaster Hyper 212+ or even a H50 at least. Those buggers run hot.

Also, your mobo is probably going to be the most limiting factor here as the previos poster stated. The issue is that the Q6600 only overclocks well with the FSB and usually requires between 333-400 FSB to achieve a reasonable overclock. And your mobo I don't think can handle higher than MAYBE 350.

If you need help, look at my newbie guide in my sig. It was writen from my Q6600. But keep in mind, I had a nice Q6600 with a 1.275v and a G0 stepping which allowed me nice clocks. Yours....is a B3....that is all have to say.
