Should I upgrade x58 to x79 or Z77 - Page 3

I'm gonna go against what has been said - upgrade now, while your x58 setup is worth something.

Think about it, how much is your setup worth today? How much will it be worth when z77 and Ivy Bridge are both out?

And by the time a future generation does arrive that makes 1366 look weak, your x58 setup will not sell for as much as it can today.

So it's better to sell it now and pay a little out of pocket while you still can.

The performance increase from a 970 to a 3930K just isn't worth the cost, IMO. I wouldn't even make the move when Ivy-E hits next year. Wait until they release the extreme edition of Haswell. I'm guessing that will be sometime in 2014.

If this is anything to go by:

The higher the resolution, the more likely you will need, not only the CPU processing grunt to feed a large multi-GPU setup (read: Tri/Quad-SLI), but, also, the bandwidth to really let them stretch their legs.

Currently, I am facing the same decision as you as I intend to upgrade my Surround monitor setup to triple 27" 1440p monitors. In that case, it looks like X79 seems to be the answer, unless you get a Z77 board with a PLX chip. redface.gif

Same thoughts, here. Thought about upgrading from my i920 4,4 ghz.. but it's just not worth it.
I think you should get more ram (6 gig wasn't enought for me) and that's about it

X79 2011 all the way you are ready for ivy bridge-e to when it comes out so your future proof to

Honestly, i would wait till next chipset you have a nice system right now if you wait you can save up some and get a sick system when next chipset comes out after IB. If you desperately wanted a upgrade X79 would be your best bet because it will future proof.

Nothing is ever future proof. But lately I've been thinking of selling my rig to get 2011 but now I'm having second thoughts on that. The only thing I'll gain is SATA 3 and PCIe 3. Then i thought I can get a PCIe card that will give my SATA 3 and also nothing right now even comes close to maxing out the bandwidth of PCIe 2 let alone 3.

I was in the same boat when X79 was released Nov 2011. I decided against upgrading seeing my 980x is still capable of doing most of my duties which is gaming, video encoding and basic school stuff. In order to persuade me to upgrade, I'm looking at the next 8-10 core architecture.
