ESXI on a HP Proliant DL380 & ML370 Both G4

Thread Starter
I have two older servers that im looking to install ESXI onto so that i can operate several VM's off the host. I'm more interested in using the DL380 as my box as i like the rack capability with out having to buy the adapter for the ML370, as my 370 is configured as a Pedestal.

I have 16GB of dual rank ram that im going to see about setting up per some specific configuration that i found bu have yet tried.

I have had issues with installing ESXI onto the server.

Keep complain that the CPU's don't support VT

From Googling, I'm not sure you can install ESXI on it. The CPUs used inside the Generation 4 DL380's dont support Intel VT.
I think someone did manage to get it to install but said it was very slow.
What version of ESXI you using?

ESXi 4.0 is reported to work by a few but is unsupported. VMWare says that they only support from G5 upwards on ESXi. I ran ESX on a few G$ before but I had to pay for that.

Also note you will only be able to run 32bit vms

I'd prefer to run the latest, V4 is the one that was throwing a fit.
I had an issue with V 5 earlier on a desktop i was running it on as VMware seems to have gotten confused about my license and telling me it's not valid for version 5, but if i sign up for V5 it gives me the same code so i have yet to install 5 on the boxes yet.

Noted, thanks. I saw that too but i also saw other reports of people getting it to work.

32 Bit VM's is fine heck the machine maxes at 12GB and 16GB ram so it's not like i'll be running many 64 bit apps at their potential with the hardware limitations. I also saw reports of people using 3.5 and getting 64 bit OS to work. Haven't looked into it as i would prefer to run the latest version as noted above. but what ever version is found to be most effective for the hardware will ultimately be the one used.

I'm also toying with the idea if selling these two servers and trying to pick up a G5 to get around this whole issue, and i would prefer the 775 platform system.

You need Intel VT ... the virtualization extensions. Otherwise you're going to have to find a version that will work without them (and that is going to be very unlikely or impossible). You also won't be able to run any 64 bit virtual machines and, provided you can get it to work at all, you're going to take a huge performance hit on 32 bit machines.

Just a question - are the CPUs 32 or 64 bit?
