According to Apple's quickly-to-evolve definition of "Retina" is simply a display where you are unable to distinguish individual pixels at a distance at which such display would normally be used. The iPad 3 originally didn't comply with the PPI required to be considered "Retina" by Apple's own definition (300+ ppi), so they added the part in bold and problem solved.

Whoops missed the IBM part thought it was the Samsung one >.>

Is there a difference in.how the iPad 3 is and when desktops have the 2560 Res? What I mean is on a.desktop u get more usable space than 1080 however.on my iPad 3 its the same stuff.on.the screen just.clearer

$36K is affordable to you? You know, I need another GTX 680 for SLI. You don't have to send me a Christmas present, I'm just saying you could send me one.

Also, that's "only" 127 PPI which is still a far cry from 300 PPI.

It wasn't "just" announced. It's been announced a good while back. Perhaps june 2011 (http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/21/eizo-industrial-monitor-does-4k-resolution-at-36-inches-start-s/) ( I really don't remember tongue.gif )

And it's not a "retina" display. It's just a high resolution display at 36" diagonal.

"Retina" displays? Never. Closest you'll likely see is a 2560x1440 13" Macbook Pro at 225 PPI.

Even if you took that 4Kx2K display and shrunk it down to 23" it would only be 200 PPI, and after that you'd need the full bandwidth of a 4 lane DisplayPort cable just to display a 60Hz image. 120Hz/3D wouldn't be possible.

And then you have to deal with no operating system support. Windows 8 should have proper DPI scaling but Windows 7 doesn't, so a "retina" display connected to a Windows 7 PC will have text too small to read. The reason we've been stuck at 1080p for the past 5-6 years is they can't stray too far from the 96 dpi baseline without making everything tiny.

Display manufacturers aren't going to release monitors that won't work properly in Windows 7, so while we'll likely see 15" 2560x1440 laptops, we probably won't see any change in desktop monitors.

The absolute best case scenario I can see would be manufacturers pulling an Apple and just quadrupling the resolution up to 3840x2160. That way they could run at 1920x1080 in Windows 7 with pixel perfect scaling while running at native res when proper DPI scaling is available, either in Windows 8 or fullscreen Windows 7 apps.

For desktops it will be a while as many people are moving to mobile devices. Tablets are coming out with it around June like the transformer infinity from Asus. MacBooks are supposed to be the first laptops with it so for a larger selection I would say later this year. Desktops I am guessing next year during the summer.
