An OC n00b needs help with overclocking his i7 930!

Hey all,

I just registered on these forums for the main reason of learning more about the ins and outs of overclocking. I put together my current system a bit over a year ago and had overclocking in mind. For the first year I was using stock cooling and a purely "meh" PSU so I stayed away from overclocking. Recently, however, I acquired some new hardware that allows me to get into it finally and now I'm most interested in getting my i7 930 (stock clocked at 2.8 ghz) up to 3.6ghz or higher. Here are my system specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
Intel i7 930 Bloomfield 2.8 ghz processor
Geforce GTX 560ti 1gb graphics (stock overclocked to 950 mhz)
6 GB of ADATA DDR3 gaming RAM
Asus Rampage III Genie motherboard
Thermaltake Black Widow 850W PSU

Right now I know hardly anything about overclocking, when it comes to BIOS settings. I'm obviously still trying to figure out how my Rampage III's BIOS tweaks work, and would appreciate any help you all can offer especially if you know this motherboard well. As I said, I would like to OC my CPU to 3.6 ghz or higher, but don't want to do it until I know what the safest way is. I heard this CPU overclocks nicely, so hopefully that turns out to be true.

Thanks!

well the best way to start.. make sure cooling is good to go then start bumping your blk up with you voltage a little at a time. make sure its stable using prime for a few hours and go for more. There are loads of stickies on teh fourms here you can read up on

What voltages should I increase "a bit at a time?" I have tons of options with this motherboard. What does "a bit at a time" mean exactly ... what is considered a lot versus a little?

I know that different mobos, CPUs, and such can have very different settings. I don't want to just start tinkering with stuff unless I'm fairly sure I won't do damage. I'll try to look around on this forum, but honestly, it's an overwhelming amount of content to sift through when there is a healthy amount of variation between different hardware.

Hi there,

Have a good long read of this guide, it will help you a lot.

http://www.overclock.net/t/538439/guide-to-overclocking-the-core-i7-920-or-930-to-4-0ghz

Here are some settings I used to get to 3.8ghz on air cooling
Disable turbo and speed step, Eist, c3/c6/c7 spread spectrum
Enable LLC and I leave C1E on to save heat etc

21x181
1.21 vcore
1.66 Dram
I think my Qpi was around 1.35v had 1333mhz ram Oc'd
and my RAM at 1480mhz ish ??? lol
I leave memory timing on auto until you get it stable then tighten them.

I run 24/7 at 4.2ghz on water cooling
21x 200
1.29 vcore
1.66 dram
Qpi 1.275 - got 1600mhz ram with water cooling setup and was able to lower qpi
1600mhz ram @ 8-8-8-24

Be patient and have fun. smile.gif

Thanks all. I'll have a good look at this stuff! I'll post again when I have questions.

By the way, the new cooler I now have is the Corsair H60. Just FYI.

I tried that set up for 3.8 ghz in my BIOS and after playing BF3 for about 10 minutes I got a blue screen. Unfortunately I didn't write down what its says but that was a pretty clear sign to me that either it's too much for my system for some reason or I somehow messed up the OC and maybe tweaked the wrong values.

Thoughts?
