Am I Doing It Right, Or Wrong?

First time CPU overclocker here, having fun playing with my i5 2500k, but I have some questions...

I'm using an Asus z68 with the UEFI Bios, an I5 2500k, and a V6GT cooler. I started out by simply raising the core multiplier to 40, and setting the voltage to 1.25, while leaving the M bus at 103. This worked great, temps below 60 running prime for 20 minutes. I then raised to 42, still worked great. When I raised to 45, I got a crash, so I decided to raise voltage to 1.30 and see what would run stable there. I ended up getting the multiplier to 49 (touching 5.0 ghz in prime) with tempatures still under 70 after 20 minutes. So after reading around, it seems that 5.0 ghz is quite uncommon for a voltage as low as 1.30, and I could seemingly go on higher and higher... but as a novice overclocker, I have to think that something isn't quite right here.

Also Relevant, Windows experience index never goes above 7.6, even at 5.0ghz. Seems unusual. Also, I'm running 1333mhz ram, soon to upgrade.

You can't be sure that your system is stable after just 20 minutes of prime.

You'll have to test for a longer time than 20 minutes.

Yes, I've been running Prime95 for 20 minutes to quickly check each overclock. I'm running it right now for longer on a 1.28v @ 4800 mhz overclock.

Make sure that you run CPU-Z as well.

To monitor the vCore and the clock speed as well, to make sure that it is not spiking, you won't be able to test if it's stable if it spikes.

Could he just have a golden chip? That is if it turns out to be stable I guess...

How long should I run Prime95? I definitely can't be there to monitor it for 12 hours, and I'd like it to not exceed 75 degrees or so. Should I just set my tempature shut down to 75 and walk away?

Some people say 12 hours, some say 24 hours. But you'll need to run it for longer that's for sure.

My 2700K crashed after 8hours of prime once.

EDIT: And it even crashed once after shutting down prime after a stress test.

Which test are you running in prime?

Blend, LargeFFT, or SmallFFT?

and which prime ? 26.6 or 27.4 ?

10 minute fft's is 10 hours in 26.6 blend
10 minute fft's is 14 hours in 27.4 blend

also good idea to leave your bclock at 100
