Issues w/ New Build....Please Help! - Page 2

At this point it sounds like you are simply dealing with a bad motherboard. You could get this verified for free at many places that do computer repair(Best Buy) if you feel so inclined, or if you have access you could test you components that you believe to be good in another system. The only thing I would be concerned about is does the processor still work(it could have made that smell if it went), but in my past experience a bad processor wont even really start up.(the fans kick one for a second, but immediately spin back down and the system never looks like its going to power on at all)

Chances are this sudden smell you experienced was the outgassing of some melting material....(capacitor/chip/resistor) In fact if a part literally went bad like that, it will frequently still smell bad(like burnt electronics) if you give it a sniff up close. It sounds funny but I've noticed it many times in passing without really thinking about it too much.

IMO your best bet is to take advantage of some free diagnostic service, but if it does the same thing with everything disconnected(even the GPU) then it pretty much has to be either the processor or the motherboard that went out on you.

Edit: These same places that offer a diagnostic have a small device they can connect your PSU to and determine if it's bad.

After testing everything any way possible and removing everything, including swapping the Antec cooler for the stock Intel Cooler, it almost has to be the Motherboard.

My question is what would have made it go bad? It was brand new and worked perfectly then all of a sudden went south. The fact that there's no video signal coming from either the GPU or integrated made me suspicious of the motherboard from the start.

So, I guess I will just order a new Motherboard and PSU and see how it goes from there? I'm thinking an ASRock Z68 Extreme 3 Gen3 w/ Rosewill Capstone 750w PSU. Any better suggestions in the budget range?

Well there should be a warranty so you can just return your items that went bad prematurely.(motherboard) If all of your components were used then yes I guess just purchase a new board.

I would definitely hold off on the new power supply, if it did go bad and fry the board then your graphics card and CPU are(most likely) dead as well. I don't think that is what has happened here. When a PSU fails to supply enough power the system will restart suddenly when under peak load.(intense game/benchmark)

I just realized I have the exact same PSU as you do, and on my rig it's running an intel G850 with a GTX 480. My GPU has way higher power requirements, and I have run this system with an overclocked i5 2500k at 4.7 and the GTX 480 without issue during intense benchmarking.

I don't believe the PSU is bad. It ran everything perfectly (and quietly) and still continues to do so. It's cool to the touch and the fan works as it should. I've never heard of a PSU going bad and still running everything in the System.

Well, I wasn't completely comfortable with that motherboard to begin with so I will be picking up a new one anyways and after the Biostar returns from RMA, I'll just sell it.

Is there any risk of the same thing happening to the new board, though? I've never had a motherboard go out on me so I'm not sure what caused it. I just hope it had nothing to do with the PSU because it would be bad if I left it in there and encountered the same results again.

It can happen if there was some piece of metal bridging two important spots. Maybe if your motherboard tray pinned a piece of metal under your motherboard but up against the traces. If the PSU was causing it then your other components would also be fried by that voltage spike.

Most likely you just got a defective(or even counterfiet http://www.tomshardware.com/news/piracy-chip-semiconductor-fake-Counterfeit,15221.html ) part on the motherboard that managed to last 20 minutes. Either way bad new components do happen no matter who you buy from if you buy enough.
