PC Randomly Freezing

Thread Starter
Hello,

Recently my PC has been freezing, randomly. This can be any time; working, gaming, Internet browsing etc.

I get no error message, BSOD, nothing, and the only way to do anything is to hard reset my computer. I can see everything on my monitor, but my PC becomes un-responsive. One thing I did notice however, was that I was opening a document and so the windows 7 loading icon pops up (blue circle that spins around), and my PC freezes. However, the circle carries on spinning.

I also wiped my PC and did a fresh install, still the same problem.

So, does anyone have any suggestion to what could be causing this? I'm guessing it is hardware which isn't so good, but I have no clue what it could be. Thanks.

Sounds like it could be the hard drive, possibly memory. I would start by running a chkdsk on your machine to see if that pulls up any errors. Go to start>run>cmd. The command would be chkdsk /r. See if that reports anything and we can go from there. Report back with results please thumb.gif

The hard drive test came back fine, It's not the best one out there but it works for now. Have you run any programs to detect how hot the machine is running? Your symptoms could also indicate an over heating problem. Try opening the case and make sure theres no dust on the fans. Run this program http://download.cnet.com/SpeedFan/3000-2094_4-10540297.html?tag=lst-0-1 to check the temps. I would leave the cover off the machine to make sure all the fans are working as well, then put it back on of course so you can replicate the environment when the pc is freezing.

Use HWMonitor or Realtemp for temperatures.

Just because a hard drive comes back clean from a chkdsk doesn't mean that it's not a problematic drive. A chkdsk just fixes windows file system errors/corruption and reports bad sectors. Find out the brand of hard drive and run the corresponding diagnostic utility. Seatools for Seagate drives, Data LifeGuard for Western Digital, etc. I think Samsung and Maxtor drives will also use SeaTools. Running memtest from a bootable disc would be my next step.

Edit: 154 degrees Celsius would literally make parts start melting. That has to be a mis-read. Use Speccy for more accurate temps

Yeah, it's a misread. RealTemp shows ~ 25c & 27c

Memtest is next then...
