Well for PC gamers like me. We don't pay thousand of $$$$'s to play on medium settings. If that was the case I'd stick to console. But then again i probably wouldn't because mouse and keyboard dominate. But see BF3 maxed out to the max on 3 screens even 1 nice screen, and you'll understand why then. tongue.gif

EDIT: I'd change cases and PSU's though. Switch 810 & AX850 corsair. Switch 810 can do both WC & air way better.

The choice of the case was from aesthetics and they are basically the same at air cooling. Why would you get a 850w psu when even this 750w psu is overkill especially because its almost double the price for 100w more.

:clock:The lesson is that in five years a 500$ GTX 680 will be about the equivalent of a 100-150$ card. You will probably get better overall performance over a five year period starting with a 200-350$ GPU and then upgrading it later.
If you feel the urge to upgrade sooner then whatever card you bought could be SLI/Crossfired and by the time you were ready to do that the GPU you originally bought would be cheaper.(the downside is if they stop making it you will have to buy a used model) So if you bought a 7870/7850 now and then two years from now you got the itch, you would likely be able to find another one for about 100$ less than they cost now.(guesstimate)
It really just depends on how much you are willing to spend compared to how important in game performance is to you. If it does not bother you to set something from "ultra" down to "high" or "medium" then even a 7850 might last you five years without feeling too slow.

Yeah when you put it that way it definitely makes a lot more sense now, and so every 2.5 years ill spend 250 maybe 300 at most on a graphics card so in the end its kinda like me spending $500 on one graphic card that will last me 5 year except ill be getting two within in 5 years biggrin.gif. Also you really think that 7850 would last me five years and its only 250? and thank you for that explanation it definitely makes mores sense to me now thumb.gif

Keep in mind, that PSU calculator assumes full load with a mild overclock too. At stock it won't pull nearly that much, and even overclocked you're still fine with a 750w PSU. There's absolutely no need for more.

Yeah you are right I will not be needing more than 750w

Traditionally getting the "ultra" setting to play smoothly on the most modern games was always tough, and typically required a dis-proportionate amount of power when compared to the next lowest "high" settings. Once you get down to "medium" a gaming system that is 1/4 of the price will be playing the game nice and smooth.
People always want more, which is why there are like six different models of each car so that you can have the one with the "most" power or the "most" gas mileage or whatever it is that you want the most of. If you want the "most" years of gaming enjoyment from your PC you should spend at least 800$ on the parts, and you should be sure to buy brands that have superb warranty support and customer service reputations. If you bought a PC with an i5 2500k, 7850 GPU, eight gigs of RAM and a powerful reliable power supply this would play games for the next five years. By the time the newest games of 2017 get here the 7850 will be feeling a bit slow(it'll feel weird changing things lower when you used to just max every setting), but should still be very smooth at medium settings with decent resolution. By this time you could either get another 7850(likely dirt cheap) or replace the entire PC with another 800+$ build.

I understand now and thats why I really prefer a video card that will allow me to play all my games on high because to me I feel ultra would maybe be amazing for awhile, but after a few weeks I probably just end up playing on high anyways. Also my reason for mainly wanting to play high is because if I play games at medium I might as well get an xbox -_-

now im rocking 2 GTX480s that came out 2 years ago and i can play BF3 on ultra with every setting maxed and it does anywhere from 70-90FPS on 64 man servers.

If the gtx 580 comes down in price maybe ill get one, but as of now its not worth the extra money just so I can game a lil longer tongue.gif Thanks for the info about the game devs and the hype much appreciated, and thats pretty impressive that you can play on ultra with 2 480s

I do agree though that I dont want to spend all this money and to only be able to play games at the same level as a console, and yes I did want future proof, but if im not going to run two video cards at the same time I don't need more than 750w. Also corsair is a really good brand from what I hear, but my friend @UltraHoboLord convince me otherwise thumb.gif

I think I mentioned something about this, but if not here goes.

The current Xbox 360 GPU is terrible, and the Xbox 720 is going to be using crossfire with two low end GPU solutions. A single 7850 will be much much faster than a 6670 crossfire setup, so even when games are coming out for the newest consoles you will have more graphical power than what the games are designed to run smoothly with.

Yes you did mention something like that, but like lets say in the future 1.5 years from now the 7850 cant play a game I want on high so I have to play on medium, so since Im playing at medium wouldnt it be the same as playing on an xbox? Thats the part that im a bit confused about. headscratch.gif
post #98 of 288
Well since an Xbox can only play as well as its hardware allows, if you are forced to play on medium due to it running slow, you can assume the Xbox is running it on low/very low or even a customized setting reduced below what the PC settings even offer.

Chances are the game will be optimized to a certain extent at the lower settings, so that the current Xbox model will be able to play it without looking visually unappealing. Following this logic medium settings will probably run well even on mid/low end systems for the next long while, and your hardware exceeding these standards will continue to run games at higher settings than the Xbox will be capable of.

Granted they will continue to make "ultra" settings taxing even for extreme PCs which might be four or even eight times(+) as powerful as yours, so in just a few years Ultra settings at really high resolutions will be out of reach for your system. The difference between how well Skyrim and Oblivion run on medium is negligible, but on the maximum(ultra) settings Skyrim(more modern) is much more taxing. They were both made to play on the Xbox 360 so they will look pretty good even on medium settings which are optimized for the best performance/appearance ratio aimed at lower end hardware.

Edit: As a side note 99% of games released on both console and PC will be optimized to run at medium ish settings on the console smoothly, and the PC version will have the option to run it at similar, higher, or even lower settings than what you will see on the console version. This allows a broader range of PCs to play the game(a bigger market for them to sell to) It is rare that a game will have special extra low settings for a console, more often the entire game will be optimized until it runs smoothly around medium on whatever hardware the console has, and if you have better hardware you can expect better settings to run smoothly. If you decide to keep the PC until the Xbox 1440 comes out then you may be forced to run games at lower settings than recent consoles.(assuming they ever put a GPU with real power into a console)

I am willing to take any suggestions you guys may have, also my gaming build limit is $1300-1500. Here is what I got so far.

(Build updated on 4/10/12)

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor ($179.99 @ Microcenter)

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus 76.8 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($22.99 @ NCIX US)

Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($147.86 @ Newegg)

Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($59.99 @ Newegg)

Hard Drive: Crucial M4 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($147.99 @ Newegg)

Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($97.99 @ NCIX US)

Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 570 2.5GB Video Card ($347.55 @ Newegg)

Case: Cooler Master Storm Trooper ATX Full Tower Case ($149.99 @ Newegg)

Power Supply: Rosewill 750W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($88.00 @ Newegg)

Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($17.99 @ Newegg)

Total: $1260.34
  • Why are you buying motherboard from Newegg if you're buying 2500k from Microcenter? They usually have combos that give you $50 off mobo. Buy both at same place.
  • Do you need an Extreme4? Extreme3 is cheaper and performs just as well.
  • Replace that Seagate with an F3 for $89. A superior drive for $10 less (use coupon code EMCYTZT1435)
  • Replace the 570 with Zotac 580 that comes out to the same price after promo code ZOTAC45 and a mail in rebate (409-30-30=$349)
  • That's a really expensive case. Cases are all about preference obviously, but I'd think for $150 you can get something sexier... but again, that's your taste.
  • If you're planning to SLI in the future, you may have problems using that Rosewill PSU. But from what I saw, that has been discussed ad nauseam already.
Happy shopping.

Now I understand, thank you very much for clearing this up for me I really do appreciate it.

-Okay so motherboard and cpu from microcenter got it
-I went with the extreme 4 bc of the z77
-I plan on building this in late may early june so that discount wont apply for me, but if that hard is 109 or even cheaper by that time I will definitely get it
-I believe im going to get a 7850 instead of my 570...what do you think?
-Where would you recommend I look for cases because on newegg I dont find many of them to be attractive or have really good air flow
-and yes I decided not to sli or crossfire
