Combining Monitor Speakers w/ Logitech Speakers = 4.1 ???

Thread Starter
I will begin by clarifying that I don't actually understand how 4/5/7.1 actually works. With that said, I am trying to get my new S220 Logitech speakers to work in unison with the speakers on my ASUS monitor. I am using a Creative X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty and as far as I know, the card works great. But now I am trying to plug both the auxiliary of my S220 as well as the auxiliary to my ASUS monitor into the sound card. My uneducated guess tells me that this should create 4.1 audio. Instead, my ASUS was silent.

Anyone know how I can get this to work out?

why not? im not doing surround, it's all coming out of the front.

im just experimenting, i want to know if something like this works, and how to do it. i have no specific reason as to why i want to do this.

You should b able to make a 4.0, with the monitor as front left/right and the S220 as rear left/right (the sub on the S220 would only get bass from the rear channels so not a true 4.1). It's been a while since I've had a Creative card, doesn't it detect and ask you what you've plugged into it?

when you say it would only get bass form the rear channels, you mean it won't release bass out of the bass-dedicated box on my floor?

here's a picture of my Creative Console Launcher:

yes, it detects that I've plugged something into it, but that side left/side right is a microphone jack. it doesn't know exactly what's been plugged into it.

now, i know my ASUS monitor speakers work. when i set the sound to AMD DP Output through my Displayport, they work just fine. but then i try to plug the auxiliary into the front left/front right and set the sound back to the Creative X-Fi, and suddenly they don't work anymore. could it be the fact that the Displayport is plugged in that it won't let me use auxiliary? does anyone know if that's typical?

If you want to duplicate the front channel (stereo but from all speakers) you'll need to just use the green plug on the card and a splitter to both monitor and S220. If you want surround you'll need the green to the monitor (front speakers) and black to the S220 (they'll be rear speakers placed behind you), and configure the sound for 4.0 or quadraphonic. I'm not sure where in the creative software but you should be able to go Control Panel>Sound, highlight the Creative Speakers and Configure and Quadraphonic.

There isn't any way to fully integrate the S220 sub into surround. The S220 will only play sound from the rear channels. If your playing a stereo source (music for example) and use the upmix (JMSS 3d or something like that) you'll get the full bass from the sub but not for 4.0 (games, ect). It could turn out to be a bit unbalanced as the S220 will most likely have a lot more bass than the monitor.
