FX-4200 (1 core/module)

So apparently there's an FX-4200 coming. What's interesting about this one is that unlike the other quad/hex FX chips, this CPU will actually have one core per module enabled, whereas the others have entire modules disabled.

FX-4200
Stock speed: 3300MHz
L2 cache: 1MBx8
L3 cache: 8MB
TDP: 125W

The only way for it to have 8mb of L2 is if every module is enabled. Kind of interesting as this will bypass all resource sharing and effectively make it a "true" quadcore. Have a look at this article by xbit where they disabled one core per module in the 8 core Bulldozers. Gains of anywhere from 8-25% were had when using 1 thread per module instead of 2 modules with both threads.

All in all this could be a pretty neat quad if it's priced right. I imagine overclocked appropriately this would actually be a superior choice to Phenom X4s. The hit from resource sharing is quite substantial at the moment. A single thread on an FX4100 scores 0.97 in cinebench, but the total score across two modules only ends up at 2.97, a 300% increase instead of what should be a 400% increase.

edit: I would actually go so far as to say it would be the best FX gaming chip, especially for the money if it ends up being released like this.
edit2: Proof of a possible FX-4200 with the specs I listed

The 4200 sounds cool.

We need to have a bench-off of the FX-4000 versus the Phenom II quads, since everyone ass-kisses the 960T when it is two years too late.

Do you have FSX ? I want you to try the unlocked chip on it , that's if you can and have spare time.

Thnx in advance.

I said best FX cpu, but yes the 960T is a great chip. Unfortunately it won't be available for much longer, it's already gone completely here in Aus. frown.gif

IPC is irrelevant. IPS (what is actually important) is a function of clockspeed * IPC. Also FX quads actually consume less power than Phenom quads.
