Why is everyone going crazy over Gtx 680? Are they that much better?

I ask this because am in the market of getting a new gpu upgrading from a 5870 sli. whatever gpu i choose between 680 & 7970, I will go sli or crossfire eventually but not right off hand. But i've seen trade 7970 for 680 threads & even guys selling there 7970's to i dont know..get a 680 perhaps? because some will only state " oh i add an extra one so am selling this one" "right" rolleyes.gif Its seems everyone is going out there way to get there hands on a 680 since they released? What is this? I play Bf3 at 1920x1200 & was wondering like is there really that much of a advantage with the 680 than other now budget cards like 580 used & other year old cards?

Or is it just the bliss of having the latest nvidia card?

Its new, its shiney and its Nvidia.... but mainly its new tech
post #3 of 15
Its people buying the newest card available.

But really, I would get something like 7870 or whatever nvidia comes out with at that price range.
The top end cards are nice, but unless you've got money to burn the cheaper cards will run the same settings at the same resolutions but just not at the higher FPS.(both are totally playable though)

wow.. this is crazy.. I cant even lie tho am almost sucked into buying into the hype as i have several times in the past as well. I do have the money but do i really need 20+ more frames if i even get that in bf3? when am already getting over 60. DAMN! Us pc gamers are such whores when it comes to new tech. I wouldnt change my addiction to what i love tho but after many many years of this i think am finally gonna start being a tad bit smarter about this. There's not even anything out new to take full advantage of these new cards & as soon as winter comes when all these new games starts poping out then it'll be an even newer tech released to advertise those games on. sigh..

Think am gonna go fish for some decent priced 580's & hell if am lucky maybe i can get a 3gb version for around $350..... NOT!..biggrin.gif lol

Naw hats off to anyone that own a 680. If i had it to seriously burn because i think thats what were doing here i'd be right there with ya. Its almost like buying one of those over priced extreme cpu's when i can get a $300 version of the model cpu & oc it to infinity & beyond. for the same if not better results. smile.gif Not the same things when dealing with gpu's but you get my point.

If you have the money and dont feel bad spending 500-550 on a card then do it. But as other people have said, for the price of 1 7970 or 1 680 you can get 2 580s (used) and have really good performance especially at your res for now and a good while to come. You will of course get more fps than a single 680 or 7970, but sli 680s and xfire 7970s will last even longer, although not by much simple because the 580 is still a great performer when even compared to the newer cards from nvidia and amd.

It was a nice upgrade for me. At my res, a GTX580 with 1.5gb vram was giving me a little bit of a bottleneck, and I couldn't get ultra BF3 to a playable FPS. This now smooths out at 50-60fps on ultra in BF3. Overclocking was a breeze. It also runs pretty cool for a reference card, so any of the new aftermarket cooled ones should be running pretty cool. Overall I was torn between the 7970 and 680, but I was able to get my hands on one for the 500$ MSRP, so I took the opportunity. Will likely SLI later, as they are good on power and my quality 750W should work.

Overall, it may not be an upgrade for people already maxing games on their current res. But, I recently upgraded my monitor, and decided to follow suit with my GPU so I can get better performance in the main game I play (until Diablo 3) which is BF3.

OP, if you were to buy a new card - you may find a GTX580 will fit your needs for now. If you can find a great deal on one, it would be worth it. I was able to ultra BF3 no problems @1080 with my MSI twin frozr ii OC before upgrading my monitor. However, the 680 is a pretty nice upgrade if you can get your hands on it / have the $. If you plan to stick with one 1200p monitor for a while, stick with a 580/680, as you probably wouldn't utilize the VRAM the 7970 has to offer.

i replaced my 560-ti with a 680..

so far i'm pretty amazed

I dont play battlefield, but i do play skyrim, D3 and starcrat. all 3 games, ultra super extreme settings, 2560x1440.. 60 rock solid fps (vsync on)

my old card couldnt do that. So.. for me this is a very worthwhile investment smile.gif

Because we can? A 580/6970 (last flagships) Will still dip below 60 even 40 in some games. Witcher 2, crysis 2 with dx11 and hd textures, Bf3 with mxaa4 and metro 2033, and probally a bunch of others. It can also do 3 screens on its own, oh and people that play in 3d get their frames halfed so with one 580 there frames will be really bad in a few games. Higher resolution I know still 90 percent of pc gamers out there are still bound to a single 1080p or 1200 monitor like myself but there are plenty that play at 2560x1440 and upwards of that.
A 680 is most likely over kill at our 1900x1200 res but remember most of the people "buying into the hype" will be playing at much higher resolutions, oh and why not have the best parts in your pc if you can afford it. For alot of us its a hobbie and something to be proud of building it so may aswell put the best that we can in it isntead of a bunch of crap just to get the job done.
