For BF3 Ultra 1080p what frequency 2500k

Thread Starter
I run 560ti 2GB in SLI @ 932/2300, 8 GB RAM and 2500k

I have profiles for 4.0, 4.5 with c3/c6 on (with Vcore upped 1.328 prime load) and c3/c6 off(1.288 prime load)

I am not sure whether I am imagining this but in the big 64 player b2k maps like oman or sharqi the 4.5 seems to help keep the minimum framerate up to my cap @ 59FPs more, nearly locked in fact.

The downside of 4.5 is more heat, more aggressive mobo settings and louder h100.

Is this a placebo effect or does the extra bump in speed help? Thanks for opinions
post #2 of 21
Placebo unless you are running at a really low res which I doubt you are using a 560ti, I suspect 1080p. If so wether your cpu is at 4ghz or 4.5ghz your gpu is still a bottleneck and your cpu clock won't make any difference.

Appologies I just noticed that you are running SLI, the extra bump in core clock "might" make a slight difference but I doubt it

Try finding spots in between... maybe you can achieve your desired settings at 4.2? Question for you though: If you're playing the game that intensely, you've probably got a headset on... so how do you hear your H100? I tend to only hear what comes through my headphones, my computer could sound like a Harrier jet inside the spin cycle of my clothes dryer and I wouldn't even notice.

When i run the perfoverlay, the only time i get dips is when the cpu spike, usually in a tank zoomed in shooting another tank with particle effects everywhere.

I am not sure tbh, most likely is placebo, wish there was a benchmark within BF3 to test for av max and min frames.

Yea I have about 10 Akasa Voodoo fans, two fans on each gpu and the 2 h100 fans going so it is loud, it's just when I browse the internet the h100 will be on the periphery of being loud and tolereable @ the 4.5 setting.

Perhaps you should get some quiet fans as that is probably the easiest solution other than lowering your clock and voltage.

I'm ok with the noise, I can tone down the h100, I'm just sort of wondering if any testing has been done on this game and if the 4.5GHz is beneficial to running the 64 player B2k maps?

I am sort of under the impression there is, at least with minimum frame rate on these select maps. Has anyone else tested?

The extra bump in speed probably does help.

The best way to check is to monitor CPU usage on a 64 player B2K map when your CPU is at 4 ghz. I personally notice I get better FPS on a single 7970 (1260core 1600 memory) when my 3930k is at 4.7 compared to 4.4 but I always run background shiz so I'm not 100% sure.

Anyway, if your CPU usage is 80%+when at 4ghz (probably will be due to SLI), you have a CPU bottleneck. Try to find a happy medium, can you lower your voltage a lot more to get a slightly lower clock?

Example:

1.385v I can get 4.7???ghz on my cpu

but at 1.44v I can get 4.87????

The heat difference is ridiculous and not worth it for me. Instead of 1200rpmx2 fans at 54 degrees load, I get 1480rpm fans at 58 degrees. I can hear the fans over my gpu fan at this level so NTY frown.gif.

Could you get 4.4ghz on 1.325v or something? Wouldn't hurt performance that bad. Also I have the h100 with custom fans and it's not very loud at all. What temps are you getting? With less vcore than me and higher fan speeds (I'm using different fans) and less cores you shouldn't be breaking 54 degrees. If so describe temps (Y).

Guys the 2500k is most likely bottlenecking.

No hypertheading, BF:3 can use AT LEAST 12 THREADS BETWEEN 60-90% on a 3930k @ 4.7ghz, lower clockspeed (4 isn't anything to write home about on sandy bridge) and HE'S RUNNING OVERCLOCKED 560ti's IN SLI which matches the 680/7970 @ 1ghz ASSUMING 80%+ (IE GOOD) SCALING. (-any issues with profiles/stuttering vram the lot).

If you have some money to spare I'd recommend getting a new pair of fans which you can run quietly (1400rpm or less) and have better cooling/noise. What's your budget? $20/$30/$40?

This test was done on a multiplayer map using a 580, I honestly don't think that there will be much difference between 4ghz & 4.5ghz

CPU usage @ 4.5 sometimes goes to 76% according to task manager.

I think SLI is more CPU demanding then than a single GPU? Which could be a contributing factor?

Thanks for the replies as well guys
