Upgrading PC - Which new parts

Thread Starter
Hello,

Recently my PC has been acting very strange (randomly freezing). I'm doing a few tests to see what it is, but thats on another thread.

Anyway, I had my PC (In Sig) just over 3 years ago, and I can tell its starting to show its age now. I play all types of games; LoL, BF3, TF2 etc, and for example with BF3, I can just about run it on the lowest settings it will go.

So yeah, I think I need an upgrade. I was thinking of an i7 build.
My idea:

Mobo: ASUS P8P67 EVO

Well my current mobo wont support an i7, nor DDR3 RAM. Im not so big on motherboards, so i'm assuming something like this would fit into my Antec 900. If anyone could suggest anything else, that would be swell.

RAM: DDR3

I'll just get 4GB DDR3, no harm done.

CPU

Now, this is where i'm really not with the times.

I know i7's are supposedly awesome from gaming (or so everyone tells me), I was looking at around £200 budget on this, but if someone could suggest one for me, because I really dont know what would be best for me.

Or what about the i5? http://ark.intel.com/products/52210

GPU

The last thing I would buy, I currently have a 4870, which I could sell for a small amount of money I guess. But, hell, these things range in price so i'm not really sure. My current one could last a while, while I get this build together.

Also, the Antec 900 is a pretty small case, i'm assuming the newer ones would fit okay?

Given all this, would my PSU (650W) still be okay? Or would I have to upgrade that aswell? :/

You could go with the defacto gaming standard: i5-2500(K). This is a quad-core beast and is still hailed as the best bang-for-buck CPU out there at the moment. Alternatively you could go for it's slightly better (and more expensive) cousin the i7-2600(K) which is basically the same, but with HyperThreading (Two logical cpus per core) and a higher stock clock speed.

However I would recommend that you wait about a month until Ivy Bridge is released, which will bring about a 3-10% gain in CPU performance of our current i5-i7 chips. The i5-3570(K) and i7-3770(K) respectively.

Alternatively you could go for the enthusiast i7 series and get a i7-3820 (4 core) or i7-3930K, but then you will be paying through the nose for both CPU and MOBO.

Your PSU would be fine for a build like this, assuming that you don't get a beastly GPU and don't go for SLI/XFire or massive overclocks.

Thank you,

Yeah, I was just looking a bit more into the i5... which is cheaper (better for me). I think that seems to be the best option for me, as I want to try and keep the prices down more.

Could you recommend me a Mobo? I don't want anything state of the art, just one that is more up-to-date and actually support these new gizmos!

Sure, do you have a brand preference?
Also do you want to overclock at all?

I have overclocked in the past, but for now I have a lot going on so I would say no, but its a possibility.

In terms of brand preference, not really. I've always like ASUS but thats just me (which is why I posted that link), but yeah - nothing super expensive, but is able to support all of these new toys in the town.

EDIT:

Also, I have a akasa venom aftermarket cpu cooler. Says it supports LGA775, LGA1156 & LGA1366...

If you could afford it then I would go for something like this:

ASUS P8Z77-V Intel Z77 Socket 1155 DDR3 PCI-Express Motherboard £149.99
or
ASUS P8Z77-M PRO Intel Z77 Socket 1155 DDR3 PCI-Express Motherboard

However these are both Z77 which have just been released in the last couple of days, so the prices are still high. If thats a bit steep I would go for a Z68 or P67 motherboard like

ASUS P8Z68-V LE Intel Z68 (REV B3) Socket 1155 DDR3 PCI-Express Motherboard

The advantage of Z77 though is that you are guaranteed support for PCI-Express 3.0, and the Asus boards have Intel LAN which is a bonus over the realtek chips. Also they are Ivy-bridge ready if you wanted to go down that route.

whats your overall budget mate?
Thread Starter
Thanks mitch smile.gif Would I really need a Z77 socket one? I mean, I dont think the benifits would be that great for me.

Well I wouldnt say I have a strict budget, but I wont be buying everything at once (as I would have to stagger my buying).

But I was thinking;

Mobo: ~£100
CPU: £150
RAM: ~£50

For the GPU, I guess I would have to do some research on those.

Those numbers arn't strict, but I wouldnt want anything massively over.

Also, my current PSU is 620W, if I got a new GPU would I have to upgrade that too?
