Understood, but if developers did that
1. Better game
2. More sales
3. Less complaints due to better optimization
4. Pushing the consoles graphics to da maxxx

Why not just a dual or quad core SB or even Deneb/Thuban based processor, standard 2-4GB of RAM and a decent GPU like a 7770 (modified to work better in a console of course)

Heat. Something like that would be fine in an ATX or even mini ATX case but I don't think you could get similar specs to that into something that will fit in an ITX or even smaller case and still run cool. The 360 has this sort of problem when it first came out that is why so many of them were overheating and dying.

I think it has more to do with profit.

With RAM being so cheap for us on the retail end, you can imagine that large companies buying mass quantities of RAM would be even cheaper so I would say they just probably ATLEAST go with 4GB, but to hell with that, why not go with 8GB or even 16GB of system RAM? These consoles have to hold up for like 6-8 years and even for current PC's, 4GB is kinda "standard" now and 8GB is soon to be mainstream so I would think a good 8GB+ for consoles lasting the next 6-8 years should be reasonable.

I'd say 4GB is below standard. My mom picked up a brand new laptop a few weeks ago for £350 and it had 6GB RAM.

I am both a consolegamer and a PC gamer. I just tend to favour consolegaming. Yes it's a bit less beautiful graphically on certain games. But it still looks great. I don't mind losing that for the ease of console gaming. Like I said it's my opinion that a lot of PC gamers make it a bigger issue than it is. I think a lot of games on the PS3 are absolutely beautiful and I am looking forward to what the next gen brings even if that means it is "only" 6 times stronger than the current gen. I only want 1080p gaming with a decent framerate. At some point it goes from beautiful to even more beautiful. So imo you are blowing it out of proportion. Even though I do agree with you that a 7670 is a tad on the mild side I do think the next Gran Turismo, Uncharted, Killzone, etc etc will make me very happy even on the graphical side of things. And I'm pretty sure you as a gamer will be happy with the less crappy console ports.

If Microsoft did a 6 or 8-core CPU, with 2 threads per core, that should be plenty for games, kinect, OS, and some other minor stuff to each have a good amount of power. CPU power isn't a huge deal for developers, unless they're doing an RTS game, or some physics-intensive stuff, etc. Microsoft will likely spend twice as much on the GPU as the CPU, as that's where most games' power demands are.

Also, the way the PS3 is, is really not optimal. The SPEs can only hold 256kb of information at any given time, and have no access to the system memory, so it's a really pain to have them do work and keep them busy, whereas each core on the 360 had access to system RAM.

So you as a developer are quite happy the PS3 is going x86 then?
If you could choose from all AMD processors out now for PCs which one would you like to see in a next gen console?

Ram is very cheap so they boast with RAM, I don't think your mother will ever use 4GB of RAM fully (even though I don't know her but people in general don't use that much). Of course more is better. But consoles now use 512 MB, so 4 GB would be 8 times that. About in line with the hike in GFX power correct?

There ya go. Console's ruining everything by making everything easier. The developers dumbed down their games so all the video games now are truly "mindless". Back then games used to take some skill. Games such as Contra: Shattered Soldier, Quake, Unreal Tournament. Now that consoles have the developers attention, all the games are completely watered down so all the 9 year olds can play it. This movement is known as consolization. Call of duty went consolized with 4. Battlefield went consolized with Bad Company1. Unreal Tournament went consolized with 3. Crysis went consolized with part 2. You can tell when a game becomes consolized.

Another thing. If all games created on the PC and then coded to consoles, then whats the issue with properly releasing it for PC at the same time? Knowing this, the creation of console ports and even the thought of consolization makes no sense.
