Check disk question?

Thread Starter
I have been given a old laptop HDD, when booting from my good OS (win 7 Ultimate) HDD, check disk is starting, and showing many many segment's unreadable.

What does this mean?

Is it that they are physically damaged?

or

Are they just bad data sectors?

Thanks

It means what it says it means. It means a sector is bad or damaged.

Checkdisk doesn't check for physical or mechanical problems, it just repairs the bad sectors. Like putting a bandaid on the problem.

I would first check the S.M.A.R.T. status. The S.M.A.R.T. status checks for physical and mechanical signs that your drive is getting close to failing.

One common problem with laptops, is the laptop is dropped or bumped while running. The head of the hard-drive physically scratches the platter. When that happens, the drive is (usually) fine. Checkdisk should make these sectors as bad and not to be used.

If it fails S.M.A.R.T., i would RMA it or not use the drive. If it passes S.M.A.R.T., it was probably a fluke and don't worry about it.
