Hey, you have a pilot hole! smile.gif

If it were me I'd pick a drill bit the next size smaller than the whole that I see in the picture above. Place the board on on a non-conductive surface, grab your trusty drill and create your own through hole. Then pick up a couple machine screws ( flat heads that fit almost flush with the backside of the motherboard, and the little nuts that go with them). Then bolt your heatsink to the new studs that you've created.

Make sure and put a small piece of black electrical tap over the tops of the machine screws to prevent direct contact with anything else that might be conductive.

My second plan of attack would be the self adhering thermal compound - sans any shims that might create problems down the line.

Thanks for that advice Wevs and everyone else who chipped in, but I've chosen not to take a drill to it. What I did do however is take the part off the bad board and placed it under it's original place with a plastic washer to protect the board. I then got a longer screw for it and fixed it all in to place and viola, all's fine.

I managed to install a copper shim to the graphics chip as well and my makeshift fix has held exceptionally well with temps running nice and cool.
