[TPU] AMD Trinity (Piledriver) Integer/FP Performance Higher Than Bulldozer, Clock-for-Clock - Page 12

Because a gaming benchmark from 2006 realistically shows CPU performance on modern chips, right? 3DMark06 didn't realistically show performance of anything from day one. Not to mention, the legit reviews link doesn't say anything about non-power saving clock speeds. I'm cautious about Piledriver/Trinity but I'm definitely not going to base anything on an ancient benchmark.

By all current reports IB is a let down after SB (Note: Not a bad chip, just a let down compared to how good SB is/was compared to Nehalems at launch) so AMD will be able to gain ground easily.

Actually 3dm06 CPU score shows pretty well the CPU raw perfomance on overall. Its not too bad of an indicator.
Besides, thats and crunching numbers are all we got right now. If you belive those numbers or not, is already personal point of view.

It's not really a letdown, considering that it's a Tick (shrink, same architecture)

What I find interesting to note is that not only is the 5800k beating the 8150 with half the cores, but it's also beaten the i7 970. Of course, we're talking about a soon to be two generation old processor, but when Piledriver does come out, and if they can actually make good use of the "Hardware Hyperthreading", they might stand a fighting chance in the enthusiast market. What will really be spectacular is how their server counterparts fare; if Opteron pile driver cores can (and is expected to) deliver better per-core performance than Trinity, AMD could absolutely demolish the server market.

As Ivy is a tick in Intel's cadence, we shouldn't see much of a performance improvement. On the CPU side that's mostly true. You can expect a 5 - 15% increase in performance for the same price as a Sandy Bridge CPU today.

Looking over these charts, I'm not sure where the let down is:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5626/ivy-bridge-preview-core-i7-3770k/5

If you expect gains such as Nehalem to SB from an SB Tick, you're setting your hopes too high.

At least Intel continues to increase IPC...

...while still lowering Power Consumption.

Not really. Pentium Ds got higher scores than Athlon64 x2s even though its pretty obvious which one was faster in gaming. By a long shot too. 3DMark in general has always been a bit biased and not shown realistic performance for what it's meant to. (ie. Gaming)

I was meaning in impact to enthusiasts, unless it clocks higher than SB as well has better IPC most will likely want to skip for Haswell or wish they'd just gone SB a few months back.

You're very quick to point out any flaws on Intel chips ( based on rumors ), yet praise or make excuses for AMD chips, where the real let down lies.

I was meaning from an enthusiasts point of view, so far practically every rumour says lower OC potential than SB with a slightly higher IPC. IB is going to be a massive improvement for the average user.

As for IPC, saying "At least Intel continues to increase IPC..." is a very misinformed statement. What if you have great IPC but crap clock speeds? Cyrix 6x86 is living proof of this, it failed to compete with the Pentium and Pentium II as they ramped up clock speeds simply because it hit a brick wall. As is the Athlon64, it hit a wall around 3Ghz or so (Tad higher for some chips) and couldn't go much further. The opposite applies too, with Prescott and Zambezi.

Not to mention, IPC is a very fickle thing that changes versus workloads...Zambezi is a great example of it, it has a worse IPC than Phenom II in stuff that doesn't use its modules well (eg. Gaming) but has even/slightly higher IPC than a 2600k in areas that use its modules wonderfully. (eg. x264 encoding)

Also, when I praise BD, I acknowledge that it's only good for niche cases. If I'm a heavy encoder it makes for great value for money. I can get an FX-8120 + 990FX board for far cheaper than a 2600k and Z68/Z77 board (The FX-8120 alone is $100 less than a 2600k where I buy my parts from) however it will be weaker in other tasks. Assuming motherboard prices are equal, are those other areas worth an extra $100? It's subjective. I'm generally trying to say that BD isn't a horrible chip that is good at nothing compared to Intel, like a lot of OCNers seem to think.
