How long can a i7 960 and x58 last?

Thread Starter
Hi folks

I opened a thread before asking opinions on whether i should change my motherboard to 990fx or switch over to intel (a friend offered his set). many gave their opinions and in the end, upgrading my motherboard would be the best thing.

however, my friend decided to 'give' me his x58 set (before this, cost is an issue), and right now i have with me a 960 and evga classified sli (watercooling-ready)

my main usage would be video-editing/encoding/subbing and eyefinity games. i am thinking since ivybridge is cuming out, how long can this board last? in terms of upgradability, 980x etc

advices needed

thanks !!

I`d stay w/ 960 up to 2013 and see how well Haswell is

X58 is still a powerful platform, the only drawback I know of is the native sata3 interface that SB and newer platforms have. For your uses the i7-960 would do well, especially with a good overclock and if you plan to use a multiple GPU set-up.

I agree with Pontiac here as well. Ivy bridge is not expected to be much better than sb and the x58 platform still has plenty of horsepower. That setup should hold you over nicely until intels next refresh after ivy bridge.

Let me put it this way. I have seen absolutely no reason to upgrade platforms yet. X58 is still very powerful. I will probably keep mine for a year or 2 or maybe even longer before I even contemplate upgrading.
