Looking For a Laptop for my Parents (Should at least be worth a laugh at my life)

What is your maximum budget?
$400 Dollars or less my Father is very cheap when it comes to computers. I may be able to convince him to spend $550 but any more than that and smoke starts coming out of his ears.

What country are you in?
USA, near that city known for having a party with tea in the harbor once.

What will be the uses of this laptop?
Collecting Viruses through Lycos Mail, Rosetta Stone, Looking at Horses/Dogs for sale, Shopping for Car parts on Ebay and Craigslist, Microsoft Word and Excel, looking through Horse/Car Forums, and spying on my sister and I on the "Facetube." So mostly Internet browsing and videos, Microsoft Office, Rosetta Stone, compatible with a Sony Digital Camera.

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
Me, Personally, I like Asus and other ODM brands, I have had the worst experience in order from worst to best with HP (my sister 2nd pc 2008-10 best buy), Toshiba (sister 1st pc 2006-2008), 2 Dells (my first craptop 2004-2007 and parents first laptop 2005-2007), up to the Current Toshiba they own A205-S5804 (2007-ICU) which is currently running on chewing gum, prayer and me. Whatever gets picked I am going to have to fix it till i can move far enough away. Yes, Samsung is an option as well, I personally do not like how they treat the employee's at the company i work for, but that's work and I can set it aside. This PC is for them so technically any brand would be fine.

What screen size do you require?
15 inches diagonal preferably, maybe get away with 14 anything larger is fine, they want something large so they can see it.

What screen resolution do you require?
Any, something with a functioning screen. That is all

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
Ooo this is fun to answer; This I shall quote my father on my latest laptop purchase. "Why would you spend $650 on a used laptop (Asus G51jx-x1) when you can get a brand new one for $400 dollars from Best Buy." So I guess he wants a "New" laptop even though most Best Buy technology is a year old.

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
If it lasts longer then 5 minutes we should be OK, the current Toshiba (that damn Satellite A205) has a battery life of zero minutes and the plug in the jack is loose so any time it moves slightly it looses power and snaps off within a minute or less. It's actually pretty funny to watch him swear three times in a row because the laptop suddenly shut off in the middle of something yet he still refuses to spend money on a decent computer, sometimes it freezes in the bios during start up as well. The CD Rom drive only lasted a year, and the wireless card stopped working too so now it's plugged into the router. It's like the Black Knight from Monty Python.

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
None, games are the devil, and I'll use your desktop for solid works. -Dad (hence why i had to get my Asus).

What operating system do you need? (if any)
Windows 7 though Mac OS X may be more compatible with my mother (if it's on the internet it must be true).

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
Is rubber an option? or Nerf? No then i guess no preference.

How much hard drive space do you need?
I have enough HDD's laying around from old laptops that i could even manage without one.

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
CD-Rom for Rosetta stone. And a Draft N- wireless card. Please not abysmally slow that current Toshiba was and still is slow as a sloth despite my best efforts to improve it. Should have heard him when they first bought it in end of 07, i just got my M9750 a few months before.
"Why is it so slow?" -Father
"Because it's old, cheap, and Windows Vista?" -Me
"IT'S NOT OLD I JUST BOUGHT IT AT BEST BUY!! THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH VISTA WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!!" -Father

Is there anything else we need to know?
I hope this has at least been an entertaining read if you can help that would be great next time my mother asks me what they should get and he yells at her his catch phrase i've heard all my life "we have no money". The story goes that I picked up that Asus letting them know that if they want to buy it off me at cost they can. When he heard the price he flipped out and said he doesn't need some high performance gaming machine, so i told him that's fine I'll keep it then, but it's there if you want it. I have a feeling that when I move out and he is down to just the Blu-Ray player, TV, that Toshiba he'll never get rid of and whatever computer this turns out to be, He may start to rethink not buying the Asus off me but hey let him learn the hard way it won't be my problem.

So to sum it up Yes I am looking for a laptop for two 12 o'clock flashers (means every appliance in the house is blinking 12:00) preferably 15 inch, N wireless, CD Rom drive, Battery life over an hour, and "new" for $400 dollars which puts us in the Ford Pinto/Pontiac Fiero range of laptops.

Your battery life requirements put things at the upper limit to higher end of your budget(if you want guaranteed 5 hours). Plus, we have no idea of the specs of the current laptop. The uses you listed could be handled on a Atom (especially the new ones).

Sub 400 and more than enough for the tasks you listed.

Macbook Pro, because "they just work" (they're idiot-proof) /thread.

Ok, I'm done trolling. Lenovo G570, great build quality, great keyboard (yes, it's one of those fancy chiclet ones), $400, Intel i3... http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/305869/Lenovo-G570-4334-9MU-Laptop-Computer/

But wait, they get cheaper!

Toshiba, $330 (I have no clue what the Satellites are like, but I love my Portege). http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+-+15.6%22+Satellite+Laptop+-+4GB+Memory+-+320GB+Hard+Drive+-+Black/4790302.p?id=1218529551701&skuId=4790302

Asus, $350 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+15.6%26%2334%3B+Laptop+-+4GB+memory+-+320GB+Hard+Drive+-+Black+IMR+Suit/4855114.p?id=1218554265484&skuId=4855114

17" Toshiba, $370 (tell him it's pretty much a gaming laptop, he'll think it's wicked fast because it's huge). http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+-+17.3%22+Satellite+Laptop+-+4GB+Memory+-+320GB+Hard+Drive+-+Black/4790287.p?id=1218527758546&skuId=4790287

Perfect! Thanks for the help
One hour battery life is fine it will mostly stay tethered to the power cord next the couch, and the current laptop is

Toshiba Satellite A205-S5804

CPU: Intel Pentium T2330 Dual Core 1.6GHZ
Ram: 2GBs (2x1GBs) of DDR2 SDRAM 533mhz (Upgraded from 1GB)
Hard Drive: 120GB Toshiba 5400RPM SATA
Graphics Controller: Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Windows XP Professional 32Bit (upgraded from Windows Vista)
10/100 Ethernet Port
Express Card 34/54 no idea if it works

Non functioning TSST Corp CD Rom Drive (so now it's a cup holder), Non functioning 54g (802.11b/g) Wireless Card, 100% Battery Wear also known as 0% Battery Life, and where the power cord meets the DC jack on the motherboard is loose so the cord is taped to the side of the computer so power stays on sometimes, and randomly freezes in the Bios during start up.
