ATi to Nvidia - The "correct" way

Thread Starter
Hello!

Tomorrow i'm upgrading my GPU! Exciting I know.

Ati Radeon 4870 HD Toxic Edition (512mb) to MSI GeForce GTX 560Ti (2GB)

Anyway, as i've never done this before, is there anything I should be doing, in terms of un-installing drivers, etc.

Or is it literally take it out, put my new one back in, install the new drivers and away we go?

First off, uninstall the Catalyst drivers. Then download Driver Sweeper from G3D and install it. Go to Safe Mode and remove all AMD drivers using driver sweeper. Turn off the PC, swap the cards, and install the Nvidia drivers, you're done.

It is possible to run into some problems when switching from ati to nvidia, so what I recommend is this: Uninstall the old ati drivers, preferrably with some driver cleaner software, then shut down the computer, replace the graphics card, install the new drivers, reboot once more and off you go! thumb.gif

Everything will work fine if you just plug in the nvidia card and install their drivers- it's best to uninstall the ATi drivers first so you aren't loading unnecessary files at bootup. I've personally had driver sweeper cause problems, and would recommend just using the standard uninstall utility and call it good.

I think you missed the part he switches the cards? I'm just not sure of the process so I'm not correcting you:p

Use Driver Sweeper to get rid of the ATI drivers, turn off your computer, pop the new card in, boot up and install the new drivers, and you're good to go.

Honestly, I don't get what all the fuss is with using Driver Sweeper. Personally it's caused more problems for me, It's unnecessary. The standard uninstall utility is fine.
