How do you organize your RAW files?

Thread Starter
well the title says it all. I'm looking for a sensible way to organize the RAW files of my new Sony in some sensible fashion.

For Jpg it'd be rather easy, just drop in some IPTC keywords to tag the files for searching and then maybe some simple directory structure with year\event\ or something. Alas the tagging won't really work for my RAWs. Sony's Browser Software isn't helping much, it creates some .modd file per RAW and puts categories and comments in there. Sad thing is, the categories are saved as a GUID so another program can't search for something like "Landscape" but rather needs to search for "c3b8b27c-0731-4c38-b184-3a25d0e58736". The comments are plain text so dumping tags in there by hand is just asking for duplicates and misspelling.

How do you keep your pictures organized?

I keep mine organized by date. I'll add the name of a place to 'x' folder if it was a trip somewhere.
Yeah, I literally just create dated folders - months of the year - raw (2011-03 Raws), then inside that, broken down by day (and name of event or something easy to remember, like 2011-03-06 - Birthday photos). Beyond that, you're looking at - like you mentioned - some sort of indexing/attaching keyword data, etc, in another program. The system I'm using has yet to fail me.. and as long as I can remember what year something was shot I can usually have it tracked down in less than 30 seconds.

I use LightRoom3 to import, organize and post-production.. I convert my RAWs to DNG (Digital Negatives).

The organizing by date and location is popular it seems so if this works for you guys then it probably will work for me too. Do you place the RAWs and the final images in the same folder structure or do you keep them separate?

my processing chain will most likely be the Sony ARW converter -> Tiff -> Gimp -> final image or so but I'm just starting out there. That Sony converter does really nifty lens correction on chroma aberrations and other things for my gear and I like those results very much. Only drawback so far is that Gimp is unable to load EXIF data from Tiff files, apparently because no one coded that yet. Also this kind of rules out DNG but I guess that's okay.

No, that's the one thing I do a bit different I guess.

I don't edit everything I shoot, so I have dedicated directories for post edits and raws. Post edits are basically gathered up in the same general idea, except instead of being in a yearly raw folder, they're in an output folder... these still include the date, etc, but are usually a bit more descriptive. I usually dont even bother changing the file names either, unless the images are being provided to a client, at which point I'll export, rename and number the files.

All my edits go in a subfolder called "Corrected" for digital files, or "FinalWork" for film scans. Setting up a subfolder for export in LR is easy, but I do it manually if I use PS (film scans, more elaborate digital work).

My workflow is not the best but LightRoom helps a ton.

1 - Shoot photos in RAW
2 - Import/Convert RAW to DNG in LR (also adds keywords/tags)
3 - Organize by Group > yyyymm - Subject
(ex1. Vacations > 201109 - Cozumel Cruise)
(ex2. Portraits > 201107 - Mark W.)
4 - Rate each photo 1 thru 5
5 - Filter 3+ rated photos
6 - Create vitrual copies (everything from here on is done with just the virtual copy, originals are not touched)
7 - Lens correct for each lens used
8 - Post Production and move final images to 'ex1 > Final' subfolder.
9 - Upload to Flickr if needed..
