Why is my friends headphones randomly picking up flight radio communications?

This is a very weird issue. Randomly, my friend would tell me his headphones on his computer would pick up unusual radio interference and occasionally he would tell me it sounded like it was coming from planes because he would hear what you would expect a pilot to say. Not surprisingly, I didn't believe it. In fact, I thought he was completely making it up until just now.

Tonight, I was over at his house helping with something unrelated on his PC. Suddenly, we started hearing audio coming from his headphones. He yells "QUICK, PUT THEM ON!" To my surprise, I hear what sounds like an instructor giving directions to a pilot during a landing. Even more strange, it sounded like the instructor was panicking. Unfortunately, the sound eventually cut off after he started yelling "cut power! cut power! nose up! I told you nose up!"

So, I've got to ask: How is this even possible? Is there a poltergeist living inside my friends computer or is it somehow possible for headphones to pickup radio communications of airplanes? He doesn't even live near an airport. (at least none that I know of)

I've picked up airport radio traffic before on several different kinds of speakers. Mostly when this happens it is picking up AM bands. Google a mains filter, it will most likely solve the issue.

This would happen to my speakers. I dont know why it has stopped now, but it used to happen like a couple times a week.
I would have some type of talk show thing, but it was a very serious talk show, slowly fade into my speakers when i wasnt using them. It was so eerie. I miss it though :\

The audio cable works as an antenna. I've picked up FM radio on my guitar amp before.

Thanks for the info. It's weird, I've never had it happen on any of my headphones or even my guitar amp before but I guess it's common. Apparently, today was the most clear it has ever come in; he says it's usually just brief phrases and a lot of times you can't even make out whats being said.

I still don't get how it got good enough reception to pick up some plane landing though. According to Google, there's no airports anywhere near here.

I guess this is the only answer. After all, cables are designed to capture/receive signals from a source and transfer them.
