Video cards that will work with an M3A32-MVP Deluxe?

Thread Starter
I bought a used Radeon 5830 and tried it on this board, but it didn't work. The seller pointed me to some links and gave me info telling me that my board won't support PCI-E 2.1 video cards - at least not without a BIOS update. However, I have a GeForce 9600GT that works just fine in the motherboard. Since the 9600GT is a PCI-E 2.0 x16 card, I'm guessing I need anything of that interface or older. I checked Newegg with its fancy drop-down menus, and this huge link shows how I've narrowed down the possibilities to which cards I can possibly run. It seems that the 58XX cards are 2.1 while the 57XX cards and older stuff are 2.0.

Is it a guarantee that without a BIOS update I can run any Radeon 57XX card or older, and has anyone with this motherboard updated the BIOS and run a 2.1 card? Since I just recently got the motherboard and have had video card hiccups, I haven't yet installed an OS on the system. I'm used to updating the BIOS using motherboard manufacturers' Windows programs, and I'm willing to do an update as long as it provides reasonable advantages like allowing 2.1 cards and such.

Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

You should not need a bios update to run that card.
2.1 is backward compatible to 1.0.
If the 9600 works then the 5830 should.

Try the 5830 in another computer if you can.If that fails also, contact seller.
The M2N32-sli(pci-e 1.0) can run these newer cards so yours should too.

Good luck

Are you sure that PCIe compatibility is really the issue with your new graphics card? Could it not be the your new graphics card simply is broken?
I used a 5870 on a motherboard on a motherboard with PCIe 1.0 without any issues at all.

Use EZ-flash to update your BIOS.

Both the video cards & the PCIe slots are forward/backward compatible. You can use a 1.0 card in a 3.0 slot and vice versa. The slower of the two just limits the throughput capability. Are you sure it is fully seated and appropriate PCIe power from the PSU are connected?

Primarily, before I posted this I had already sent back the video card and was fully refunded. Sorry I didn't mention that, but basically it was a manufacturer-refurbished replacement that was sold to me. The fan started grinding, so I was able to return the card whether or not it really works.

I was pretty sure that all PCI-E video cards can run in all PCI-E slots, so this was odd to see. I didn't try the card in another computer and have sent it back, so I guess I'll have to assume the card was just dead instead of guessing about PCI-E compatibility. It's not scientific, but one can dream.

It actually should be that the card was broken. I'd much rather go with that than to have to read and learn about PCI-E compatibility issues. This is a much better route.

The power supply was a Thermaltake 700W, and the card was fully seated. I tried it by running the 9600GT, then the 5830, the 9600GT, and 5830 again. If it were a working card, it would have had to be improperly seated twice while in between a 9600GT sat and ran fine. It's possible.

As long as I'm now sure again that PCI-E cards work in PCI-E slots, I'm set. Thank you guys very much!

I do not think this is a compatibility issue - i think

Either Faulty Motherboard Slot

Not enough power/Amperage

GL man, Nothing worse than when you cant get a fun old Build to run =(

Currently messing with a Junker E2200 build with 4GB ddr2800mhz ram and a 4770.

So far its running much worse than my old Opteron 165, with 2 GB DDR1 with 8800 640MB

I really expected this machine to be faster, but I guess my old Opty was just that powerful back then

I am going to put one of my GTX 470s in there to see if it will work. That will solve things and then I'll have not needed to start this thread.

And your old builds seem pretty awesome. What are you doing with them?
which mine?

well most of my best work ended up being bought by my Father,

Have another Batch of components to play with, one an unknown socket 939 processor and a socket 939 3800+ dual core, that im severely interested is seeing what i can oc it too.

But I think my friend might have a place to stay now, and that is who i was testing this E2200 / 4770 for

He will be replacing a Pentium 3 and like Nvidia FX junk card lol

H plays Morrowind at 3~5 FPS with a 5 foot Draw Distance!
