Gnome-Shell, its current state...

So I've decided to fully check out some desktops now. I can build them easily and actually get into nit picking with how they work, I decided to try out gnome 3 first. Mainly since I don't like using Ubuntu, I'll use Debian first, I generally can't use the web interface. Have to be up to date, that can be a pain on Debian. So here I am, with a perfectly up to date Gnome 3. Freshly built, I went in search of extensions.

List of must have extensions:

Panel-Docklet S
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/105/panel-docklet/

[edit: alternative to panels] Deepin Enhanced Dock
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/265/deepin-enhanced-dock/

Alternate Status Menu
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/5/alternative-status-menu/

Advanced Settings in User Menu
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/130/advanced-settings-in-usermenu/

Overlay Icons
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/60/overlay-icons/

Places Status Indicator
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/8/places-status-indicator/

Quit Button
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/156/quit-button/

User Themes
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/19/user-themes/

After a while I ended up with a decent looking gnome-shell desktop that performs well. I got a theme to match the Panel Docklet, though I think I might change that in lue of another solution. I know there are panels that run alone, might grab one of those and hope it sticks to GTK+ themes. What do ya guys think? I really think this could work well with both a touch screen or kb/m.

That's it above, I decided to go dangerous and try 3.4. Not all the extensions work, which I expected, however it runs pretty freaking smooth. I'll get screens of that later, busy atm.

So far I've really enjoyed how they have put together the shell interface for extensions. It allows dumb people to do mods or themes to the main layout and it does it easily. I like this a lot, this is what we need on tablets instead of crapdroid. I found out there is another project being done by the KDE community that is very similar.

http://plasma-active.org/

I might try that out later! Apparently there is an open source tablet going for 270 that has Plasma Active on it. It's a bit dated but I guess it's for those hardcore people who want a dedicated open source tab. I personally can't wait for more Tegra3 tablets and then to slap something like this on.

Oh, and starting memory print is under 400MB. Pretty freaking lightweight if you ask me, kicks the crap out of KDE and maybe even rivals XFCE.

I find gnome-shell way too restrictive, and it fails miserably on my triple monitor setup (won't even start). I've found KDE 4.x excellent, on the other hand, it supports the taskbar on the left arrangement I like well, and everything works.

Gnome 3 is geared more towards touch. Without a taskbar/dock I would personally find it no good on a desktop. Though I guess the beauty of gnome is that you can mod it with extensions, simple web 2.0 work and it's done. Not only that it is indeed super light weight. I can't wait for gnome3/linux based tablets, so far it seems rockin solid.

Looks alright, bit too much transparency for me, but I guess that's customisable?

Yeah, I didn't really understand how awesome the web 2.0 interface was until I started playing with everything. It's all customizable, even the bar on the bottom (there are already extensions for just the bar but i'm using tint2). I think it's really great.
