Perfectly fair, seeing as how you can't overclock the i3-2100. The FX is meant to be overclocked, which is why AMD sells it unlocked and even advertises the fact that it is; it's a valid feature of that processor. The fact that the i3 can't be overclocked is a deficiency of that CPU, just as the same as any other deficiency. The only question here is whether or not an i3-2100 is faster than an FX-6100. And you're not allowed to tie one of the FX's hands behind its back by not overclocking it, just because Intel decided they'd deliberately do that to the i3.

Ummm.....pssst...I posted skyrim too....and it's not an oc'd fx... it's a stock fx pre patch. oh snap.

Oh and by the way...you posted the same skyrim results that I did...and lookie there...that glorious i3 you've been touting can't seem to get over 30fps either.....hmmmm

You must have one of those magical FX chips like me because it can't be that the GPU is so important. tongue.gif

I'm not sure how AMD vDroop works or even if there is an AMD vDroop. I *believe* (tentatively) that AMD's vDroop is designed to drop voltage at idle, not load. But this is from a rather hazy memory regarding my Phenom II 965 way back.

Everyone else seems to drop under load and I haven't asked anyone else who has a Asrock 990FX. Maybe it's something unique to their "digi VRM" feature that they list for those boards. I'm not sure.

Edit - Well really I have no clue I'm just speculating here.

Almost missed this post. That's exactly right. You can't compare two chips at the same price level and say "well you have to ignore some of the features on one chip because the other doesn't have it". We're talking value for money here. And the fact that you can overclock the 6100 only adds more value to it compared to an i3. When I was looking at which chip to buy I compared ALL of the performance factors and that is why I chose the one I did. The fact that single thread performance is better clock for clock in the i3 does not make up for the fact that the 6100 has more cores, can handle more threads, AND can overclock while the i3 can only minimally (I think it tops out somewhere at 3.4-3.5). overclock.

I've left LLC off, not sure why but things get a little wonky for me at 4.6GHz and up with LLC on.

The 81xx Bulldozers are kind of buzz kills because of the ridiculous heat crushing all my overclocking dreams. The 4100 runs really cool so it's been much smoother, looks like the 6100 isn't too shabby either. The more I've played with my 8150 the more I'm questioning the usefulness of the extra cores. So much extra heat for not much gain unless you're into benchmarking.

I'M WITH YOU THERE FRIEND, Im not an AMD Fan-boy nor Intel Fan-boy I use both platforms, and I use both GPU's ATI/and/Nvidia.

If you have any good to report to me regarding the FX6100 Black Ed. I would love to hear because in the UK I can buy cheap.. for a Nice cheap Rig, Im very much into the AMD A-Series A8 3870K Black Edition ATM.

such good value just need the correct motherboard to go along with it. its great you dont even need a GPU because of the highly overclockable OC'd 950Mhz iGPU.

MY Present system is an Intel 2500K but I like a change now and then and Lets face it, there is only so much power one needs these days because of things like cheap SSDs.That will make any system blazing fast.

If anyone has any ideas on the new FX6100 I would love to hear.

Take care folks..

PM me if you so wish... checkout my present rig too.

PS. Im buying a new 240GB SSD latter this week, when I get paid. together with an FX6100 (dirt cheap).. because of the negative press in the UK Retail prices are falling.

Honestly, unless you're going to sell off your current system and then buy the new parts cheap and therefore come out with cash in your pocket, I see no reason to switch to the 6100 from the 2500K (it really is a nice CPU). If you really did want to switch to AMD to switch things up then I would wait till the 3rd quarter of this year for PD which may make sense coming from a 2500K but that's just IMHO.

Edit - By "switch to AMD" I mean switching from a 2500K.

So, after hearing over and over and over and over how intel chips just "crush" AMD at gaming despite numerous in depth gaming reviews stating that any modern 4GHz quad core will do roughly the same with minimal increases over each other whereas GPU upgrades are far more important (unless you're running quad SLI/Crossfire with 3 or more monitors), I decided to do some gaming benchmarks with my system. I'm starting off with just a few so far since I haven't reinstalled everything after the upgrade (I've been OC'ing and benching). So, I'll start out with Far Cry 2, Skyrim, the HAWX2 benchmark and Aliens vs Predator benchmark. Now, before anyone throws out the "well you have an old GPU" read this - http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviews/1085/pg1/gtx-570-vs-radeon-6970-and-6950-vs-radeon-5870-all-overclocked-review-introduction.html
It not only trails behind the 6970 and 570 by just a small margin in most of the gaming benches it actually is faster in some benchmarks. And consider that the 5870 is very widely used. I ran the benchmarks at stock, 4GHz and 4.5GHz as well as overclocking the 5870 from stock to 900 GPU and 1300 Memory. Now let's look and see how the FX-6100 did with these 4 games.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
391

For Skyrim it's set on ultra preset with 8x AA and 16x AF. I benched using Fraps with a run in the beginning of the game from the "execution" scene through the dragon attack scene until you have to decide which side to follow (nord or imperial). There's a lot of action going on so it's a good place to bench at.

I'll post the 1080p Benchmarks tomorrow.
