8800GT only running at 8X but my 4870 runs at 16X

Thread Starter
title says it all. My 8800GT seems to only run at 8X 2.0 but my 4870 runs at 16X. Im not sure why it has always done this ever since i tried it on my current MoBo. It doesn't even post in my other HTPC build. it seems to play games fine with consistent results being right on par with other 8800GT's so its not getting bottlenecked but i wonder why it does this.

Has anyone ever come across this before?

Was just gonna suggest the same, most motherboards have 8x and 16x PCI express slots. Don't worry though, 8x pci express lanes are PLENTY for a 8800gt. You would not see any difference if it was running at 16x.

I think the first(oldest) card to actually benefit from 16 lanes vs 8 was the GTX 295.

As said above it won't hurt the performance but it's still interesting lol.....

Hmm are the drivers up to date? How are you checking the Pci-e speed?
Small wonder.

Not sure but it is possible that it could be the video card itself, may only support pci 8x... only thing I can think of.

hmm its buggin me lol.
no it used to work in the other system and it ran at 16X but then during a game screen went blank and after that it never posted in that system again, but to be fair that mobo is probably half dead anyway the onboard is dead, the NB ran at 97C for 3 years till i got it. so who knows what it did to it.
