I will say mechanical keyboards indirectly improve your gaming performance.
It just makes using your keyboard so much more comfortable.
And when your are comfortable, you performce better. just my 2 cents.

The simple fact is that mechanical switches are more reliable and last longer. There is no arguing that if you hit a key and nothing happens, it hurts your game performance. Mechanical boards don't hurt performance so much as they prevent any performance from being lost

My lycosa has stayed the same for over 6 years now, no wear and tear, the same all even pressure on every key. i use my PC alot about 15 hours a day everyday,
www.raptr.com/stoogie
i've never had a membrane keyboard wear out on me before. Maybe you don't take good enough care of your peripherals...

And anyway you shouldn't be buying a keyboard for 'longer lasting' you should buy a keyboard for what you are most comfortable with.

I'm not saying i am better, I'm just saying that buying a mechanical keyboard wont make you a better gamer.

Well good mech keyboards dont translate as well as quality mice do for gaming - but consider things like hitting modifier keys with movement and some keyboards not registering them properly.

My keyboard is backlit - i have to hit keys 5-0 and and "n" since theyre often used hotkeys for Starcraft 2 - even tho im a touch typist i find myself glancing to make sure i build my Nexus or hitting my 5 key to select my Templars for some quick storms

It helps, at least certainly doesnt hurt.

Mechanical Keyboards (blue switch), are awesome for games like SC2 and the RTS side of gaming. The clicks from the blue switches let you know that you are actually hitting the key when its needed to be fast and accurate. There are some pluses to owning the keyboards, but no minuses to owning one. So they are not worthless for gaming. Though when it came to typing my Blackwidow actually increased my typing speed by quite a bit.

So many variables and matters of (subjective) preference here, the basis of the argument in either direction is pretty pointless.

EX: If you're an ape of a button masher you're not going to make use of a mid-actuation point / tactical bump.

The fact that you say you can type faster with it completely shows that it would help gaming performance under your train of thought. The fact is, you have to be very top tier for gear to even matter that much to you and improve performance. Give me the best skateboard and I'd still fail vs a professional rocking a walmart board. You won't gain anything until you're incredibly proficient enough for the higher skill ceiling to matter. Mechanical keyboards are just comfortable to use, anyway.

I believe that my razer blackwidow was a well made investment for both typing and gaming. the reliability from the tactile bump and click makes my actions more precise in game. Not to mention, the faster response time increases immersion.

For fps games, I don't use the mouse to shoot. I use the keyboard. MX blacks make tapping single shots and shorts bursts much easier and consistent. So for me, I find my mechanical keyboard quite helpful.
