Thread Starter
Hey all. Im in a dilemma. I can buy sandy bridge 2500k i5 for 180$ or i can wait until ivy bridge and probably get the equiv for like 220 or however much its gonna be....
This website has lowered prices on cpu's.. but idk how long theyll take to lower the ivy bridge ones...

Hm.... any suggestions? tips?

It would depend on what you are using the computer for. If you are primarily going to be playing games, then I would suggest just going with the 2500k.

Otherwise, it may be in your best interest to wait it out.

I mean, i dont game that much, i just have a really old 2.2ghz quad core and a crappy mATX and ddr2 ram. Id probably get some kind of z77, 4gb DDR3, and 2500k.

I run dual screens, browse a lot, game some times, and i have a 5770 radeon. Would getting the i5 + mobo + new ram help with my gaming a lot?
Im not great with mobo and cpu stuff.

First thing I would do is get rid of that myspace mirror pic. wink.gif

Save your money get a 2500k with a z68 board and 8gb ram.

You won't see any benefit from Ivy with your needs.
the gains of ivy brdge aren't allot from what I'm reading. Mobo are pretty much top oc asrock, asus. ddr3 ram is really cheap atm. And going from a 2.2 ghz cpu to an unlock I5 is a big upgrade. I'm not up on old gen amd gpus so i don't know if it will bottleneck you or not.

Will help if you play games like SC2 and GTA IV. I would personally wait. Also get 8GB since its so cheap now. Once IVY drops and you see what its not much change then you can probably score 2500K for cheaper.

it could be at the end of the year by the time IB cpu prices drop anything significant.. if you want to go cheap, get an i5-2500k and a z68 you will have a beast of a rig that will overclock well and still serve you well into the future smile.gif

i had a normal avatar, but it wasnt allowed to i just threw that up there. i dont even remotely look like that anymore lol, i dont really care about the ava, plus that isnt what this thread is about.

but thanks, i dont think i would need ivy with what i do really either. plus i will most likely overclock, so i think id be fine. im leaning towards sb + z77

anyone else want to throw anything in?

you don't even really need a 2500k.
in order to really take advantage of a processor that powerfully efficient, solely for gaming, you're going to need a way better graphics card.

honestly, I would sell that 5770 here nice and quick for about 70$ and buy yourself an i3 21xx or pentium Gxxx + the cheapest motherboard you can find that makes you happy.
even the cheapest processors these days don't have a gigantic impact on game performance.

use the money saved for a better GPU.

edit: do you do anything other than 'run dual screens, browse, and play the occasional game' ? anything processor intensive like rendering?
