Questions for i7 920 - Page 2

I agree with the rest, Max oc potential a 920 has with conventional cooling is about 4.3 with a good batch.. I too have gone to 4.4..could go 4.5 but temps wouldn't be tame enough..

68c on a 920 that does over 4GHZ? Consider yourself lucky.

The 920 is really on its last leg. It will never get to 4.5 or above that like the SB's can. Don't bother trying, otherwise you'll end up with a burnt chip.

4.4GHz is Max. I clocked my old 920 there once & the board simply burnt.

You got to remember that default speed is 2.66ghz so stable overclock of 4.2 - 4.4ghz is extreme. That's 2ghz overclock over stock. I'd like to see 2600k run at 5.4ghz 24/7. Also, 920 is 4 years old wink.gif

Like others have said you are not going to get much higher then that and still retain 24/7 stability. IMO 1.39v on the core is already more then most of us would like to use for long periods of time (increased risk of cpu degradation). However I'm interested to know is you have HT enabled. HT generates a lot of extra heat but your temps look pretty good so I'm guessing you have it turned of. Turning HT on will give you more of a performance boost then a 100-200Mhz clock boost will so that's my recommendation.

I do have HT enabled.
If you were only using your computer for gaming etc and no heavy threaded tasks you could turn off HT and gain a 200-300 mhz possibly and boost fps slightly in games wink.gif

I have a friend that is in the business of being a technician, he instructed me that I should be able to get my i7 920 to 5.0 stable on water cooling.

I found out that I can't, why? My memory sucks....can't overclock it to the necessary values.
