Antec 1200: The Silent HDDs

Thread Starter
A silent Antec 1200? drool.gif

Thats what I am going for, I wish I already would have a silent build but I am edging towards it. I recently purchased some new NoiseBlocker fans and a CoolerMaster Megaflow to replace the case fans and I am happy with their silent performance. The next areas to tackle, are CPU and VGA cooling, but I already have some very silent yet powerful watercooling planned to eliminate that noise (currently have the H50 and its annoying). So whats left over are the HDD's and the PSU. I found a wonderful alternative to the current 1000W PSU I have, being the upcoming BeQuiet Dark Power Pro P10 1000W psu, so the only thing that remains in theory is HDD decoupling.

I wish I could exchange everything with SSD's but 1TB of qualitative SSD's is far too expensive, so my only option is the decoupling of the HDD's. The only problem in the Antec 1200 is that there seems to be no way to do any decoupling at all unless I throw out the HDD boxes.
My question is does anyone have tipps for reduction of vibration/humming due to my HDD's?

The HDD cages of the Antec 1200 look like this (incase you don't know):
300
504

Any ideas?

the best possible are from Grow Up Japan called Smart Drive. The second best would be the Scythe Quite Drive 3,5". Unfortunately both are EOL and can only be had at ebay.

Too bad. I had hoped there would be some new or atleast relatively new HDD silencers.

well
you could get rid of the cage thing and suspend them there
suspending them will get rid of vibration, but you will still hear the motors
i haven't found a solution for that yet
put them in waterproof bags and drop them in a res smile.gif

Uhm, well, that would be quite the extraordinary solution, but I think I'll pass. redface.gif

I probably have to get rid of the cage, but I want/need to keep the front part for the fan, dustfilter, and appropriate wiremeshes in the front.

Hopefully I'm not too late.

Grow Up Japan still makes the "Smart Drive" enclosure. There is a new version called the Smart Drive NEO so you'll have to look it up. It runs ~100USD which is quite expensive and only holds one drive. It looks like your drive cage is the same width as a 5.25 drive so maybe removing the cage and simply using Smart Drives would fit perfectly.

Depending on how much storage you actually need, I really recommend getting SSDs instead. What I did is get enough SSD storage for my things I use often and store everything else on externals which I only turn on to store or transfer files. But my storage requirements might be much lower than yours since I only need ~400gb of SSD space.

If you are going for a silent silent CPU cooler, a high end air cooler might do a better job. Don't forget liquid cooling still requires fans.

If you didn't buy the PSU yet, the Seasonic X series or Corsair AX series PSUs are probably better. The fans are close to inaudible and if the PSU is under 20% load, the fan doesn't even turn on.
