Heck I still haven't found a better deal out there than an i5-2500k + MB + RAM bundle that was available after xmas this year that I passed on.
I guess the only good thing about waiting is that I have an EVGA GTX 680 SC in the mail getting here tomorrow and if I had built sooner I would have ended up paying $600 for a 7970.
So now, there's the fine line between deciding if snapping up one of the last 2500ks on the inevitable bundle clearouts and saving maybe $30 or so over the equivalent IB cpu is the no-brainer way to go or not... if the SB is going to be cheaper, cooler and faster at OC it really does seem a no brainer but it really rubs me the wrong way psychologically to be buying "last gen" stuff for a brand new build. Hell I could have held on to my horses before buying all of the other components and waited for Haswell if I knew in advance this would be the situation.
But hey, hotter IB than expected? I guess I'm glad I have the NH-D14 sitting in a box on the floor then after all.
Oh well, I have to stop over analyzing it and just remember that the CPU is hardly going to matter for what I'm going to use the PC for anyway (gaming / work (software development)) for the next few years from the looks of it at any rate and just start thinking about how I'm going to find the time to play DIII again.

IB is not a downgrade. It's a minor upgrade. It only runs hot if you go over 1.3V. You can get to 4.6-4.8GHz on air. 4.8GHz IB = 5.2GHz SB. IB comes with PCI 3.0 and higher RAM speed support. How's that downgrade?

Are you sure. I sad now if Ivy 3770k can OC 4.6-4.8GHz on H70/H100 without crazy temps and better Performance 5% on same clock than 2700k I will buy CPU immediately. That mean I can OC 4.5GHz in future on H100 and better Performance than 2700k for me that is enough because I don't want 2 years old HW with 8 years USB 2.0 and old PCI-E 2.0.
That new things never mind if people talk that is nothing for me that is important. I dont want same things from period Core Duo or somethig else.
I mean on SATA 2, USB 2.0. Over 5 years I listen about USB 3.0 and now to buy SB and next 3 years native USB 2.0.
I don't need 4.8GHz(neve), I don't need 4.6Ghz(never) but I want to know my CPU can normal 4.5GHz stable.
This is not too much. I think this is normal request. I will keep on 4.0GHz but I want to know he can 4.5GHz.

Sandybridge isn't two years old and coupled with a Z77 board you are going to see the same benefits minus a few hundred mhz on overclocked memory speeds and true pcie 3.0 bandwdth which is irrelevent for 99% of users unless you plan on 3-4 way sli etc.

Sata 3, USB 3.0 is nothing new, and pcie 2.0 bandwidth will not be saturated for years

Thread Starter
I have seen a lot of "hate" towards Ivy Bridge so have written a quick section on the first post regarding my thoughts on Ivy Bridge, note that this is ONLY based on what i have seen from other chips along with my chips. This is ofc only speculations and we have to wait another week before we know for sure.

Sorry if this was asked before, but is it possible to run RAM at 2400mhz speeds or so on a Sandy Bridge CPU + Z77 mobo?

A couple of months back didn't intel bring out their new overclocker warranty? If thats the case can we can ignore temps and oc till they blow up and get a new one?

Yup, for 25$ i think.

And IB is most likely built to handle the heat.

IMC is integrated on to the CPU nowadays so you won't see noticeable memory speed increases from upgrading to Z77. IB's IMC can handle higher memory frequencies than SB so if you want 2400 speeds stable you should look for a IB CPU.
AFAIK SB can't really do 2400 Mhz even though Z77 motherboards support it.

PS: IMC = Integrated (or is it Internal?) Memory Controller.

I've posted this in other threads, but this basically explains why Ivy Bridge runs hot and why it has a negligible performance increase.

Great stuff!!! TY!

Back when I last overclocked, everyone disabled speedstep/turbo and all those other features, but it seems now many people just leave everything on default and start overclocking. What's the case with IB? I'm not exactly looking forward to learn UEFI bios for the first time. Haven't overclocked in over 2 years, i'm rusty. Would like a good "starting point". rolleyes.gif

It's not bad the UEFI bios, i am an old timer and have never wanted to learn the UEFI bios, but it's quite simple. I have all the usual things off, C1E, Speed Step, C3/C6 report. I know people say it's no point in turning it off, but i just hate having the cpu throttle when idle makes me think it is slower tongue.gif

Also the reduction in power the few hours of the day it is idle does not save much money. if it cuts the power with 50% 5 hours of the day / 7 days a week / 52 weeks of the year, that adds up to ~10$ a year so what's the point.

Maybe if your machine is under load 19hrs a day.

Here is the SF, CA expense ($0.128 kW/h) for a 2500K OC'd:

~110W load 24hrs /day: $123.00
~110W load 6hrs >> ~12W load 18hrs /day: $48.81

Those are savings of $74.19 yearly and with competent air cooling you get to have a ~silent~ computer for movies, web, etc. thumb.gif
