Thanks Eggy88 for all your time/finance and effort. This has been an eye opener for my current new build. Think I will go for a Sandy for now till Haswell comes out.

check out: http://www.awardfabrik.de/prozessoren/intel-ivybridge-core-i7-3770k-und-core-i5-3570k.html
the first review by a professional german site. they tested 16x 3770k, from air over water to extreme OC. translate with google.

what you can expect:

Air 4 Cores + HT - max voltage ~1.2 bis 1.25V - up to 80°C in prime
1.1v 4ghz = ~50°C

Water 4 cores + HT - max voltage ~1.4v, 4.8GHZ are realistic

Good CPUs made 4.5GHZ on 1.2v bad ones needed up to 1.3v for 4.5ghz

hehe, not really fake, just that i change motherboards very often due to benchmarking and so on so have not bothered to activate it, the licence is in fact 100% legal.

1.4v with HT on water? Lol, not going to happen, i was hitting 77C after 25min of Prime95 with 1.35v and HT and that was with 10C water...
Also punceh tried his 3570K on air at 1.225v and was hitting close to 80C in prime, and he does not have HT.

Water with HT i would say 1.25v Max
Air with HT 1.17-1.2v Max.

If we can get ~1.2 on air and ~4.5ghz that's not bad at all considering that clock for clock it is faster than SB.

Obviously if you have SB there is little to no reason to upgrade to IB unless you for some reason need the on-chip video. This was pretty much known way before IB was ever released though. If the above numbers are true/expected then you might as well get IB if you're looking to upgrade to either SB or IB. IB seems the better choice but only by a little bit.

@eggy
the review says 85°C is ok for ivy @ 24/7. maximum according to intel is 105°C.

depends on what kind of water cooling you have, is it internal or external? internal will give you 5-10°C advantage to air, at best - maybe more in the first 10 minutes till the water heats up. the higher you clock the more problems come. there is a peak when radiators lose efficiency.

i bet my MORA3 (9x140) will allow 1.4 without problems and not even reaching 60°C. ok that's watercooling stuff for ~700-800€ in total but still...
wanted it 99% silent, so screw the money wink.gif

currently my Q6600 B3 runs @1.5v and 3.6ghz, still alive and maybe 4-5 years old ^^
compared to my old air OC @3ghz and 1.3v , the water cooling temps are 20°C better despite higher voltage and clock.

the biggest impact was on my GTX570. it went down from 85°C stock to max 45°C on 900mh OC.

but you can expect reviews pretty soon, NDA drops in 3 hours:
http://www.intc.com/events.cfm

Directly from Intel.

/edit
haha, the reviews are down again - intel must have unleashed hell on them. but still, they had to buy all 16 3770k, so intel should shut up ^^

I'm running the case all stripped down, so just using it to mount the rads, the motherboard is on a box 50cm outside the case.
If 85C is OK for 24/7 then that is great news, i will wait and see until the data sheets are released.

If you are able to have 1.4v and 60c load temps in prime and so on with a 3770K with HT on in normal room temps ~20c i will eat a whole Bhut Jolokia chili pepper and post a video of it....

I also have a Mora3 with 18x YateLoon Medium fans on the way so i will see but i doubt it will make much if any difference. No matter how many rads you have you will not be able to cool the water to under ambient room temps, and if you are in a normal room, that should be ~20c or so, i am benching in 9c ambient temps so even under load i see a 10c water temp, you will never see those temps with a Mora3 or any radiator setup in normal room conditions.
