The ones making headlines are the i7 3770k models, it doesnt get any higher end currently for ivy. I just hope they fix this. Otherwise my next upgrade will go to a 26/2700k instead.

AMD noob here.

Why do these chips heat up so much? It is 22nm and 77watts, that is very low, and still it heats up crazy!

It only heats up when you reach over certain voltage and clock speed depending on CPU(on average 4.8GHz, 1.3V). 22nm means the cores are smaller than 32nm and the die is only 75% of SB. Tight packed cores are mostly likely to cause this. The heat may build up, but the CPU itself produces less heat and it doesn't heat the case as much as SB.

The chip not being able to dissipate heat very well seems to be the issue, not that it creates a ton more. Less power for the most part = less heat.

It looks like up to ~1.2 volts the heat spreader suffices well but past that and temps shoot up fast on air. You have a little more room on water and sub-zero obviously but those on air should expect ~1.2 volts.

I myself hope I can hit ~4.5ghz on 1.15v or so. If I can do that then I'll be happy as can be! Chip comes tomorrow smile.gif

Please PM me with results. I'm interested to know if my 212+ with Gentle Typhoons will keep it cool @ 4.5 24/7.

Any1 know how IB compares to SBE generally?

The clock4clock should be pretty close to SB vs IB, but the SB-E has a 2 more cores on the high end chips so programs that used more then 8 threads will benefit from SB-E.

I looked up some benchmarks on HwBot, and IB is actually not far from SB-E in 3dMark11 Cpu score. The best SB-E is a 3930K clocked @ 5.7Ghz and gave 18.900 Cpu points, while the best 3770K atm is benching @ 6.2Ghz and gives 16.100 Cpu points. That 3770K did a SuperPi run @ 6.790Mhz, Andre has a chip that is able to run SuperPi @ 6.960Mhz (~200Mhz more) so if he is able to run 3Dmark11 @ ~6.4Ghz it should bring him pretty close to the 18.900 Cpu points that the best SB-E has.

Thanks, I am just wondering if I made the right choice with Ivy over SBE for water cooling, but looks like SBE degrades easily and both would be very similar in gaming.

Quick question, if I currently have an AsRock Extreme4 gen3 with i7 2600K, would it be worth running the beta bios and getting an i7 3770K? From what I can see, in some of the benchmark results, the 3770K is quite a bit faster.

Especially in wprime155@5Ghz. My 2600K@5Ghz takes 7.213 seconds to complete the 32M test in wprime155, while the 3770K@5Ghz is almost twice as quick, taking only 4.772 seconds - even the 3570@4.5Ghz is faster, taking only 6.691 seconds to complete...

Or am I looking at this wrong, and it is just that the Z68 platform I am using is slower then the Z77 - would a mobo upgrade would be a better option??
