Sandy Bridge CPU for Fraps

Thread Starter
I will be building a friend a rig for recording gameplay, he's on a budget so I thought a cheaper Sandy Bridge CPU will sort him out just fine, since Fraps takes full advantage of the CPU.

I know that the hard drive's speed matters too but an SSD might be out of the question. If he changes his mind about an SSD I'll probably put in a 128GB Crucial M4.

Will an i3 2100t fare well during a Fraps recording or does it make more sense to use an i5 2500k?

I think that HDD is a bigger bottleneck. Make sure it's his CPU holding him back during fraps, before you recommend a new CPU for him.

If your building a rig for gaming...fraps aside....a 2500K is a better deal. If you can afford a 2500K, get it.

Also, Tomshardware has good article on "best CPU's for the money: April 2012" --> http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106.html Haven't read it yet, but it might be very helpful to you.

I've used FRAPS

I've used Dxtory

I prefer MSI Afterburner Beta 15. It is not just a overclocking tool but it has screenshot and video recording features in it. + it's free.

The recording on MSI Afterburner has no impact in performances while recording and gaming at the same time. I highly recommended you to give a shot. 1080p recording or more depends on your resolution.

I have a 3820 and 2 SSDs in RAID and I can run PES 2012 on all high settings, including increases the LOD to max in another tool I have, at 1080p full screen with audio recording at 60fps and my frame rate whilst playing doesn't drop at all! On my old AMD system I had to go into windowed mode at 720, turn off audio and use 25 FPS before it would record in a playable state.

The file sizes for the videos Fraps produces are huge so I would guess getting a quick write speed is just as important as using a good CPU.

Ask a silly question but will it only work on MSI GFX cards?

MSI Afterburner works on all cards and brands Nvidia and AMD, Asus, Gigabyte etc etc etc all GPUs products. It's a RivaTuner based application. MSI label is just for marketing well MSI is maintaining the application up to dated.

Thanks everyone.

I didn't know MSI AB could be used to record. doh.gif

I guess if there isn't a huge impact on performance I can stick to just making his OS/games drive separate to his recording drive and keep the cheaper i3 2100 in there. He's not going to be doing much video editing and no streaming so I guess 4 cores aren't needed.
