Using a HDMI monitor with Xbox 360

Thread Starter
Ok so I currently have a VGA/DVI only monitor, and I wanted to use it to play my xbox on. So I bought a HDMI to DVI cable from amazon for like 2 pounds, and while it works perfectly, the cable does not appear to carry sound (when I plug my turtle beach X11 into the audio port on the monitor, I get party chat volume only, no game sound) and so I am now shopping for a HDMI monitor assuming it will work. (the monitor in question is http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3445529&CatId=2388 I got it free with my computer like 4-5 years ago)

So my question is, if I am to buy a HDMI monitor, will the game AND party sounds come through if I plug my X11's into the back of it?

Thanks.

The monitor I am looking at buying is http://www.scan.co.uk/products/215-acer-s221hqlbid-led-monitor-full-hd-hdmi-dvi-vga-1920x1080-120m1-250cd-m2-5ms

Seems like a really good deal for a 21.5 1920x1080 HDMI.

DVI doesn't carry sound. You'll need a monitor with an HDMI input and 3.5mm headphone jack - then you'll be good to go.

I think this is the case but can you just clarify, that the monitor I linked in the OP (http://www.scan.co.uk/products/215-acer-s221hqlbid-led-monitor-full-hd-hdmi-dvi-vga-1920x1080-120m1-250cd-m2-5ms ) does NOT have a 3.5mm headphone jack? I can't see one mentioned, but I really don't want to miss out on this deal as it's a very good price, if it suits my needs.

So for clarification, you have the mic cord plugged into your controller, an RCI coming from your headset to the RCA output on your TV/monitor, and an HDMI to DVI going to your monitor?

For reference a DVI connection DOES NOT carry audio.

The link isn't working for me mate.

I put the mic cord into my controller and the green audio cable ( http://gamehounds.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/x11-3.jpg ) into the audio port in the back of my monitor. However, this is the confusing thing. The audio port on my current monitor says Audio IN. I assume this is to use the in-built speakers on the monitor, however I can still hear party chat volume through the headset. I can only assume that the party volume comes from the USB cable/controller and the game volume comes through the audio cable, which I cannot plug into my monitor as I am A) using DVI and B) it only seems to have audio input.

So I guess my question now is, will the HDMI monitor I linked work with both game AND party chat? I looked around a bit but it doesn't seem to have an audio output port, meaning that I wouldn't be able to hear game sounds, right? I only chose that particular monitor as it seems very cheap for the specs and HDMI availability.

I think the closing bracket messed it up.

Alright thanks for clarifying that, that monitor looks good but it's also over £30 more. That's why I linked the one above, £92 seems awesome.

Ok thanks for that, I'll have a more in-depth look around for HDMI monitors that support audio. It seems like there are none similarly priced to the £92 one I linked however frown.gif
