What I would like to see is this:
2560x1600 resolution with 120hz or more, with the image quality of the best IPS's/CRT monitors, with the lowest possible latency (like the best old CRT monitors).

Now that would be something I would buy even if I had to sell one of my kidneys for it.

This with movies supporting this resolution, and with 120fps instead of the super crap 24fps that most of movies today use... (Y U still alive 360/480p)

I pretty sure you'll need OLED technology to match CRTs. (note my use of a re-badged Trinitron CRT in my sig rig)

I wasn't really talking about the size of the game's window, but referring to things within the game itself. Like, in an FPS, going from 720p to 1080p doesn't increase your FOV at all - that only happens if you increase the width of your display's aspect ratio (hence the existence of things like Eyefinity).

But speaking of power of two ratios, while that's one reason I want a 2400p monitor, I've never been able to test it in actuality. Is 1280x720 displayed without any interpolation on a 2560x1440 display with 4:1 pixel mapping? From Googling the subject, it seems like the monitor's scaler always gets in the way and ends up blurring the result.

Anyone against this is making bad assumptions or just plain doesn't know anything about resolution, etc. Sure, there will be up-scaling at first but is that no reason to use it? After all, the 286, 386 and 486 were merely fast 8086s for all people used them for. The HD5870 was merely a faster DX10 GPU at first (Due to no DX11 games being out) and the 8800GTX was merely a faster DX9.0c GPU at first without any DX10 games to run. This happens all the time with technology.

1440p is double of 720p, so double of 1080p would be next, AKA 2160p or "4k" as the marketers love to call it (due to the 3840 or 4096 pixel screen-width).

Fun fact: 2160p is also triple of 720p

If the OS lets you scale things dynamically then you could make your text and icons whatever size you want, from tiny text on many windows to huge text in one window. If Microsoft decides they don't want people doing this, there's always Linux.

I understand you can circumvent some of the hardware rendering requirements by addressing upsampling algorithms (again, you can--but who is working on this yet?). Hi...I would like to introduce you to this thing we like to call AA. It is used on so many applications that I'm confused on how you have never noticed this before.

Retina displays looks blurry to me for some reason. Anyone else notice this on the new iPad?

The only reason we have anti-aliasing is that we're stuck with these crappy low resolution monitors. Technically, anti-aliasing doesn't make anything look better, it makes everything look worse so that you don't notice how bad things actually are.
Most types of anti-aliasing reduce image quality, they just blur things over, you end up seeing less detail in the blurred image. Supersampling can give more detail, but all you're doing there is rendering the image at a higher resolution and then downscaling! I say we skip the downscaling step and just look at the image at a resolution that doesn't need AA.

Lol on a tech savy forum where everyone likes progress suddenly everyone is against higher resolutions. My theory is the following: it says 'retina' in the title --> retina is getting related to 'apple' --> apple is bad --> higher resolutions are bad.

For me: bring it on it's be great to have higher resolutions, the current retina displays are really beautifull and smooth looking, I'd love to have that on other devices as well.
If you're worried about games and such, just crank the resolution down? If I recall that's an option in all games nowadays.
