Actually, your motherboard has the Virtu chipset for enabling onboard intel CPU graphics doesn't it? I think there's an option in the BIOS that allows that chipset to shuttle certain 2D functions to the onboard GPU and then back to your cards in an attempt to increase performance. If those drivers haven't been updated in a while I suppose it's possible it could be grabbing data it's not supposed to and slowing it down.

I actually thought of the same thing today. I went ahead and went into BIOS>Misc setting>Virtu>Disabled. So far, TW2 is the same with GPU utilization during the first scene. With GPU usage in around 65% and FPS dropping into 55s while spinning and running around in the little camp site. So no help there.

All right, I just tested a bit in the camp. CPU is a 2600k @ 5.0GHz and GPU is a 7970 @ 1250/1700MHz.
LOD is Normal and "number of shadowed lights" is at high (3), reducing these two settings from their maximum value increased my framerate tremendously in the last playthrough.

On my system, the game will only scale up to three (more like two and a half actually) threads, assigning two threads running off one core gives a slight boost while assigning two separate cores gives a bit more boost, two cores with HTT (four threads) gave the same result as running three cores without HTT. The highest CPU usage I ever saw in the army camp was 30% and it mostly stayed at 25-30%, GPU usage never passed 80% during that time.

We may very well be looking at some kind of driver-level optimizations from Nvidia in this game like we're seeing in Skyrim. I'm only hoping AMD will get their driver team working, because this isn't looking good.

Thanks for the run.

I've just gotten used to it at this point. The game still runs smoothly enough, minus a couple skips and stutters here and there. Just wished it was 100% smooth since you know, these cards are $1200 and I still get jitters and stutters every minute or so. I would say that it's the game and how it optimizes the CPU/GPU usage and it isn't the most efficient, however, some people have their TW2 rigs running smoothly without a hitch, so I'm sure something's wrong with mine. Sometimes during cut scenes, it would dip down to 30s for no reason really. I doubt the depth of field in the cut scenes is stressing my cards so much that my fps tank into the 30s when GPU usage is 30-40% on both cards.

Only thing I can say about this is that as far back as I can remember from experience, this game has run like crap on AMD.

My cut scenes have a precipitous FPS drop as well, well down into the 30's. If memory serves, turning off DoF during them actually does make a nice size difference, but I'll double check that ... not like i care about DoF in cut scenes anyways.

It runs perfectly fine, I can run the game with 2x Adaptive AA without ever dropping below 45 fps in battle and usually stay at about 70-80 fps, that's perfectly acceptable in a game like this.

Don't use Cinematic DOF or the special cutscene DOF, both cuts the framerate drastically.

Did the op ever test his cards individually...? Still sounds like 1 of the ops cards is weak and carrying the other while gaming. Seeing as how he experiences issues in other games as well. It happens not all cards are 100% perfect, if they were then companies probably wouldn't even offer an RMA service.

Eh, I've got a 6750M and only get 25-30 FPS at 720p, and Cinematic Cutscene DoF isn't causing me any problems. Why would it be crippling higher end cards?

I'll add another voice to the "7970 CF does not work in TW2" chorus...

Have 2 7970 Lightnings @ 1200/1800 paired with a 2600k @ 4.8 GHz
Running a clean install of CCC 12.4 + CAP 12.3 profiles

I play through the tutorial with a buttery smooth 45-60fps with the settings maxed out, including vsync and ubersampling. It's gorgeous. 90%+ GPU usage, no stuttering... it's beautiful.

Then I go to start the game... get to the first scene outside Triss's tent, and BAM... 10-15fps, 25% GPU usage on both cards, completely unplayable. Low CPU usage as well.

This is crap. Anyone have any new ideas for how to fix this, or do we have to wait for AMD to get their act together with drivers?

Cut scenes are typically pre-rendered videos which are recorded/developed at 24-30 fps. Haven't checked whether the GPU is down clocking from 3d to 2d mode during those cut scenes but you are welcome to check yourself. Enable some sort of in game display that shows core clock speeds and try some cut scenes. If it's really bothering you I guess you could create a profile and force 3d mode constantly.

My 7970 drops to 30 fps for pre-rendered cut scenes for any game.
