I figured I would help you trouble shoot the problem today since I had the day off. I started by going back to RC11 and testing performance with each proceeding driver afterwards. Performance was relatively good with most of them except RC11, I found. However, none were as good as 8.95.5, so I decided to go back to it.
Ok, wow, where to even begin here? After going back to experiment with the previous drivers, and then going back to the 8.95.5, I am now experiencing the SAME EXACT issues you're experiencing. My FPS remains well above 60, even with uber enabled (vsync off) with GPU usage at 90 -99% in relatively calm areas , but when I go into battle, my GPU usage drops down to the 40%' ish mark and my FPS tanks into the low thirties or even into the teens now. It's like opposite land..... W T F ?!?!?!?
Now, no matter what I do, my performance is crap and nothing like it was prior to me messing with previous drivers. mad.gif I don't know what the hell I screwed up but these drivers are really starting to piss me off, as they are seemingly extremely sensitive and unstable.
Well, WiL, look on the bright side, this pretty much confirms your cards are fine and this basically narrows the problem to either driver issues (DAMN YOU AMD) or poor 7900 series optimization by Projecktd, or perhaps even a CPU bottleneck. I am running a 2500k @ 4.5GHz. Something here is VERY wrong, but not with our cards.
EDIT: Can somebody with a beefier CPU, a 3930k or x even, and CFX HD 7970's, test TW2 out?

Thank you so much for trying to trouble shoot and get to the bottom of this, but now I feel bad for messing you up too. But it is clear these drivers need major work since you got shafted by AMD as well. You'd probably need to do a clean install? Looks likely you left some RC11 drivers in your system I guess. I however, did a clean install from RC11 to 12.4 and didn't improve my performance in TW2 so

I just wanted to play the game in its beauty so I just live with it dipping into the 50s from time to time. I THOUGHT it was a CPU bottleneck at first. Why? Because on one of the missions I was getting fluctuations of 55-60 during the dragon scene in "At The Fore", with GPU usage in the 45-55% so I decided to set my 2600k from 4.5ghz back down to 3.6ghz. My FPS tanked some more from 55-60 down to 45-50 so I immediately thought it was a CPU bottleneck. But something else is going on with the drivers that are not utilizing the TWO GPUs enough because when I disabled CF, the single 7970 was also getting 45-50FPS or rather, same FPS as CF enabled.

Anyways, thanks ELCID777 for trying to troubleshoot for me and then in turn getting owned by AMD. Much appreciated, I hope you get it figured out, that way you can fix mine too =D

I play with only 25. It's just enough.

Well given the fact that more than one user is experiencing the same exact issue, I think it rules out the possibility that one of his cards could be defective, as some have suggested. I agree, I think drivers are to blame.

No problem dude. I just hope someone can get to the bottom of this so that we can all enjoy TW2 with the performance we desire. And lol @ getting owned by AMD.....so true.

To each his own I guess. But without actually troubleshooting it and knowing for sure its all assumption in my opinion. If the op doesnt want to go through the hassel of unhooking the crossfire bridge, switching between cards and stressing each one thats his choice. Me I like to know for sure. Seeing how I went through the exact same thing with my 570s and only while troubleshooting did I find out that one card was weak and the other card was essentially carrying the bad card while under load. Bad cards happen, just an issue that we deal with when building high end pcs.

Perhaps your setup mate, I run a 7970 and the game on Ultra, w/Ubersampling and I get ~60FPS constant. I only run TW2 @ 1920x1080 however.

Sorry but you don't play The Witcher 2 at max settings including Ubersampling at +60fps, simply not possible. wink.gif

I'm quite certain that I do, I have no reason to mislead OP. CF7970 would clearly see better performance than what I see.

One sec, I'll double check by booting it up in FRAPS.

EDIT: Sorry, I was infact wrong. With FRAPS open I get between 40-50 FPS and it did drop as low as 35 in rain. However, surely this would still mean that OP should not see huge performance issues considering 2xGPU power over my configuration?

Yeah, the mod is right. My "lows" are in the 20's with my 580 running at 900 MHz. A 7970 is not more than 100% better than a 580 running at 900MHz, not by a longshot.
