Agreed, I admittedly don't play with FRAPS on. I edited above post to reflect a test in FRAPS a moment ago. Low's of 35, fluctuate between 40-50 most of the time. OP's issue could infact be related to CF config as the performance should not be worse than mine.

OT: I had recently thought about getting another 7970, I may hold off a while as the only games I play are BF3, Skyrim and TW2. 2/3 seem to have CF issues.

Seeing how I went through the exact same thing with my 570s and only while troubleshooting did I find out that one card was weak and the other card was essentially carrying the bad card while under load. Bad cards happen, just an issue that we deal with when building high end pcs.

I've tried everything you've mentioned and more. I've also tinkered with various drivers, CAPs, tried default CPU clock etc., how's that for troubleshooting? Nothing has brought me back to the great performance I had before, which to me, definitely signals a driver issue. I know for a fact that both of my cards are in perfect working order, and OP has stated this as well.

AMD drivers for the 7900 series have been pretty lame so far.....

Almost every new GPU release are like that, new born card need to wait for drivers to get mature. Months ago HD6970 driver took long to get every game fixed up, there were always glitch in BF3 and etc. Just recently HD6970 turns out crap on some games. They cannot run AA well on SWTOR. ... wow.... thanks AMD.

^no, that only applies to AMD. NVIDIA has no reported launch day problems with multi-card setups, at least in my recent memory.
also keep in mind that HD 7970s were launched last year.

Thread Starter
Yeah....I am losing faith in AMD drivers. This is my first AMD card and back in January/Feb everyone will say drivers will get better in a couple months. It has been a couple months and it's still ****. People are still saying wait a couple more months for drivers to mature. My ass! It's already half way through April and honestly, I have seen no improvements over the first RC11 drivers in gaming performance. Still get the same stutter and issues in some games. By the time the drivers do get better, the 8xxx will be rumored to come out and as well the "real" high end Kepler.

Back on topic.

These CF drivers are really unpredictable to me in Witcher 2. For example, in the Kayran boss battle it stays at a good 100-120FPS the entire time. But in the earlier levels, and at other, I would think less demanding scenes, it would tank down to 50s. I tried UBER on outside and it was 20-30FPS so yeah. I don't know. I'm still enjoying the game however, I just wish it was smoother. I mean, I did spend $1100 for these to run at a constant 60+. Thanks AMD!

Welcome to AMD and crossfire.

Seriously, you will go bonkers screwing with drivers. I did, and wont go AMD/Crossfire until they get things right.

Agreed.

Bought 2x GTX680's on release and I have no issues in any game, scale is great and performance too. smile.gif

Sadly this is true, I ran away from my 2x HD6970's about 7 months ago and never looked back, so many headaches with AMD drivers getting CrossfireX to work properly in one game while the other needed older drivers. So if I wanted to play game A, I had to use driver X, and I wanted to play game B, I had to use driver Y.

In the end I got tired of it and just moved to Nvidia, so far no issues.

HD7970's are great cards, and I'm sure they could be much better if it weren't for the drivers being so bad. frown.gif

The OP should have great performance, without Ubersampling he should never really see below 100fps on Ultra settings. And even with ubersampling he should be in the 50-60fps most of the times.

I'm quite sure it's drivers not being good enough for CrossfireX HD7970's yet.

Wrong. There was horrid SLI scaling upon release of the 680s. EVERY manufacturer has issues upon release. Nvidia is not immune to this fact.

I have always been a Nvidia nut but im sure they have had there share of problems with drivers too ( though i have yet to have had a single problem with a set of drivers from them ). A buddy of mine always had problems with his 6970 CF setup and recently picked up a pair of 7970's and is also having problems with the drivers too. Im waiting for the GK110 before i upgrade from my dual 580 lightnings but i hope you figure out the problem bro.
