Buy from a Canadian retailer such as NCIX or MemoryExpress, unless you live near the area of TigerDirect stores.  Much less costly that way in terms of shipping/etc.

Try the GA-78LMT-S2P (asking for a rev 3.1 to get the 4+1 phase of course - you can ask for specific revs, I have done so at NCIX before).  Similar price range, okay quality board with VRM protection confirmed.

The 760gm-p23 is a 3+1 phase cheap board with no vrm protection known for problems

That's the board I use it's agreat board but it might be out of his budget right now. I'm looking at a comparable asus board of the same price but it has the same phase type problem. What if we assumed I didn't unlock the extra cores of the 560 it still seems superior to the athlon. Doesn't unlocking core sometimes cause stabililty problems?

I would Probably Go with the Phenom II X2 And unlock The extra 1-2 Lock Cores But it depends If your Motherboard Supports The Unlocking Ability and It Might not be stable having the phenom with 2 cores unlocked to 4 But if you want to be on the safe side go with the Athlon ! smile.gif

If you look here:

That phenom does better than the athlon, in wow, even with out being unlocked.

Not sure about bf2

Make sure you get a motherboard or are using one with atleast a 4+1 phase that is cooled as you can see from this thread...
http://www.overclock.net/t/946407/amd-motherboard-vrm-information-list

Some Athlons use a Deneb core and can also unlock. (Like my Athlon II X3 435, which unlocked into a quad with L3)
It shouldn't be an expected thing though, since there are many based off the Propus core as well.

This.

Don't go with any sort of MSI budget board unless you want your board blowing up when you put the CPU under load.

The Phenom II X2 will be better in WoW since it doesn't utilize 4 cores, but I'm not sure about BF2. You also take a risk buying the Phenom II X2 and expecting it to unlock, you may get unlucky and not be able to unlock either of the cores.

I'd say go Athlon II X4 and get a decent motherboard.

That's the thing I'm worried about with all the people saying unlock the extra cores of the phenom. It's not guaranteed that your processor will do that and those cores could be none functioning or unstable.

This computer is for someone else not experienced in this sort of thing with computers so I don't want to risk stability and my budget doesn't cover a higher end board. I've switched to this board for now just on taking the advice to avoid msi. ASUS M5A78L-M LX PLUS

So without considering the potential of the phenom to be a quad-core. In general for most of our everyday applications which proves the better cpu.

Well there you have it, in gaming at stock speeds, the phenom ii x2 beats the athlon ii x4, i think your choice is simple.
