They aren't necessarily better (especially not in terms of performance), just in terms of reliability. The 266.58 was run by just about every Nvidia folder for about 6 months* without wide spread problems. That's probably the best folding track record you'll ever find for a driver.
*This was during the time that Nvidia put out like 6-8 drivers in a row that were all broken for folding, 270-285 I believe.
I use 266.58 myself. Some people with newer cards are forced to use more recent drivers, but I owned 6 460's and used those driver's for folding. I hit 1040/2080 on 1 of the cards 24/7 folding stable. Solid!
