it is only slightly louder. I used both and the 655 is quieter. The MCP35x is a very nice pump. It performs well but it does have a slightly higher failure rate since it runs hotter. There mods you can do to make it run cooler. I just have found that the 655 is more reliable. But I do recommend getting a pump top, it helps a lot.

The Laing DDC-3.x series of the MCP355 AND MCP35X run under load around 100C for heat.

The Laing DDC-1T or called the MCP350 runs a mere 57C under load for heat. If a performance top is added to this pump, the flow increases and the head pressure is better than a MCP655. AND ... the DDC-1T (MCP350) can run from the MB CPU fan header as well.

Jump over to Martin's Lab's for a review and comparison for WCing pumps.

I have a similar problem choosing a pump, I figured I could join the conversation and maybe give the OP more options.

I've considered:
MCP655 with Alphacool HF D5 top
DDC 3.2 with PWM stock top
DDC 3.25 no PWM stock top
or any of the other DDC pump with stock tops, but I guess the other are a better choice?

One thing i'd like to know is, is the DDC 3.2 the same as Swiftech MCP 35x? Or is the 35x the 3.25 with PWM?

I hope the OP has bought one already since its been 8 months since his post, but for the resent posters... I use a mcp655 as I would rather have silence and low heat as that was my goal with water. I read that it is more reliable as well and I like not having to think about my pump going out on me. I leave the comp on even when not using it and if the pump went out and I wasn't around or my MB didn't shut the comp down it would equal sad times.

Thanks everyone. I got the mpc655 (D5) and also purchased a rheostat controller to go with it and my fans but havent needed it. I burned up one chip messing with baseclock and seeing how high i could go and after that just decided to go with the 4.3 clock on the 3820.... Cooling system even with two 580 classys in the loop is still way overkill to need the pump turned up much i think i keep it at 2 just because i cant hear it and my fans on my rad are hooked to my cpu fan header
