Just purchased a OCZ agility 3 60gb and I need your help

Thread Starter
So, I just purchased this SSD from microcenter for $35 AR and I need help setting it up. I'm going to be completely honest and let you guys know that I'm pretty computer dumb. lol.

Since it's only a 60gb, I'm only going to install the OS into it (windows 7) and here are my current computer specs:

CPU - i5 2500k
MotherBoard - Biostar TP67XE
GPU - GTX 460
HDD - Samsung F3 1tb
Power - XFX 650w
Sound - asus dg

Now, a friend of mine told me there are a lot of problems with this SSD, but OCZ has fixed these with a firmware update. I don't exactly know how to go about on updating it. Do I do it before I install the OS?

What is the difference between sata2 and sata3 and which one do I use for the SSD?

Is there a particular sata cable I should use?

I was thinking about also installing a web browser into it, but a friend of mine said that wouldn't be a good idea since it drastically slow down the SSD.

I still don't really understand the concept of how to use my HDD for just storage.

Again, I apologize for my computer ignorance. lol.

And I was just going to use this video as a guide http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ox6DHlPQI-w

Your firmware is probably already up to date. In order to see if it is use this program: http://www.alex-is.de/PHP/fusion/downloads.php?cat_id=4&file_id=9

Plug the SSD in your PC as it is now. Initialize and format it as needed. Only do a quick format in disk management: http://www.overclock.net/t/1227647/how-to-initialize-and-format-a-new-disk-for-use-in-windows-7

Run AS SSD. Select your SSD. In the top left corner when you open the app it should say 2.15 below the SSD's name. If not then you need to update it.

Once it is updated or if it is not needed to be updated start my install guide.

SATA 3, it gives you 2x the bandwidth
Quote:

no, any will do

Your friend is computer illiterate.

Have all your personal documents/files on the HDD while having the OS and programs on the SSD. In my install guide I show you how to set that up.

ahhh thank you sir!

So, having an internet browser such as firefox or google chrome will not slow down my ssd at all? He said it would because browsers are consistantly saving and deleting files which kind of made sense, but I honestly trust your knowledge over his. lol

Also, I'm installing the basic version of windows 7, which I believe is roughly around 2gbs? And after installing all of the drivers maybe around 7-8gbs-ish? I don't really game that much, I mostly play Heroes of Newerth and I'm planning on purchasing diablo 3 when it's released. I mainly just browse the web and such. What do you think I should install on my SSD? OS and browser? How much space would a browser take and since I have a 60gb ssd, what is that maximum gb I should use to prevent any sort of slow down.

No it will not slow it. Yes, they do have a cache folder where they read and write temp data, but that is barely anything really.

Windows home basic or Windows starter? I have no experience with either but my installs with Windows 7 Pro take up anywhere from 5-15GB depending on my configuration I use.

Absolutely install the OS on the SSD! You will love it! lol. Everything is just so much better.

Browsers take up barely anything...like 30 or so MB for firefox here. + the cache folder which is like up to 500MB or something. And depending on addons and such it can change.

Usually you want ~5-15% free space on the drive.

Sean Webster is the greatest and I want him to have my babies.

One last question: would I even benefit by putting a web browser on my ssd? I'm pretty sure it won't make load times any quicker. I'm sure it will reduce the noise quite a bit, though. lol.

I'd say so. The browser will launch almost as soon at you press the icon and everything should be a little more responsive.

Also, idk if you read this yet, but if you want to learn a little on how SSDs work and such read this: http://www.overclock.net/t/1179518/seans-ssd-buyers-guide-information-thread

I am still revising and adding info too.

I need a little more help. lol. I can't seem to find the section on how to use your HDD as storage.

Also, am I suppose to install the drivers onto my ssd or hdd?

And how do I go about on reformatting/deleting all the files and windows from my hdd?

And one more thing, lol, if I get a virus, I would just have to reinstall windows on my ssd, correct? and not have to do anything to my hdd.

Yea, unless the virus put itself on the HDD then you just need to delete the files from it on the HDD first.

Sorry sean, but I need your help again. lol. This is the only part of your guide that I don't understand. I don't understand what it does and what the purpose of it is. Care to dumb it down a little for me? lol. Do I need to follow this step?

And yeah, I know it's been awhile and I still haven't set-up my SSD, but I've been busy with work and school. haha

Configure a drive using a BIOS/UEFI motherboard and MBR format:
-> (Click to hide)
Well, here you can choose to keep the Microsoft system Reserve partition or not.

On a fresh (custom) installation of Windows 7, where Windows 7 is installed onto a new hard disk with unallocated disk space (no partition or volume been defined yet), or when user attempts to create a new partition out of empty drive, the Windows 7 installer will create an additional partition with the size of 100MB, and mark as System Reserved.

The 100MB volume is labeled as System Reserved with NTFS file system, and System, Active, Primary partition attribute with no drive letter in Disk Management. The 100MB system partition is used primarily as BitLocker partition for BitLocker encryption. Additionally, it also holds the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and boot files with boot manager for booting up the computer for troubleshooting when there is no Windows 7 installation DVD disc on hand.

The Windows 7 created 100MB partition is not the main boot partition or boot drive, but serve only as a backup.

For Windows 7 users who do not intend to use BitLocker, the 100MB partition can be removed subsequently and easily (link). However, users can stop and prevent the 100MB partition from been created in the first place during installation.

Booting and partitioning of Windows 7 with the System Reserve Partition:
Boot from your Windows 7 installation media.
After booting you see the Install Windows 7 screen, press Shift + F10 to open a command prompt.
At the command prompt, type Diskpart, press Enter.
Type List Disk, press Enter.
Type Select Disk # (where # is the number your drive shows up as), press Enter.
Type Clean, press Enter.
Type Convert MBR, press Enter.
Type Exit, press Enter.
Close the Command Prompt window.
Click the "Next" button.
Click the "Install now" button.
Accept the terms and click the "Next" button.
Choose "Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)."
Select the partition and click "Drive options (advanced)"
Click "New" and then click the "Apply" button. Two partitions should appear. Click the bottom partition.
Click the "OK" button and then click the "Next" button.
From then on follow the on screen instructions till you get to the desktop.

Booting and partitioning of Windows 7 without the System Reserve Partition:
Boot from your Windows 7 installation media.
After booting you see the Install Windows 7 screen, press Shift + F10 to open a command prompt.
At the command prompt, type Diskpart, press Enter.
Type List Disk, press Enter.
Type Select Disk # (where # is the number your drive shows up as), press Enter.
Type Clean, press Enter.
Type Convert MBR, press Enter.
Type Create Partition Primary, press Enter.
Type Active, press Enter.
Type Format Quick FS=NTFS, press Enter.
Type Exit, press Enter.
Close the Command Prompt window.
Click the "Next" button.
Click the "Install now" button.
Accept the terms and click the "Next" button.
Choose "Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)."
Click the partition.
Click the "Next" button.
From then on follow the on screen instructions till you get to the desktop.

Video Tut: In the Video I also set the drive up with 4096 alignment, you can skip that part if you like, just don't type align=4096 when it is shown. More info on alignment in the 4th post in this thread.
