Its clear that a 7850 isnt much of an upgrade so i'm ruling that one out.
What if i can get 2x 6850's quite cheap and run them in crossfire? (Would still be around a 100 dollar cheaper for me) I cant keep my current 5850 because its going into my girlfriends rig. So thats not an option...
How would 2x 6850 in crossfire perform vs a single 7870? and what would be the disadvantages of going for an older 6xxx serie card?

You would be VRAM limited. It would have a good amount of GPU power, but the VRAM would be bottlenecked quite bad if you want to run with AA/AF.. and it would only get worse with more games to come. I would either get a 2GB card or the GTX580.

6xxx cards a a lot weaker than their 7xxx counter-parts and they still cost a bit. You could consider crossfiring 7770's too.

Price drops should be coming the 78xx series way soon since the 79xxs are getting price cuts. I would wait till then you'll be happier that you did. biggrin.gif

ever think about getting another 5800 or a 6850 and Crossfire them? and hold out for 7870 prices to drop? ive seen 5850 and 5830's on CL for around $80-100..... just an idea if your trying to improve current performance without spending alot of cash right now.

Thread Starter
all right, pretty clear then!
I am going for a 7870 then somewhere between now and a few weeks, hopefully the prices will drop a little. Are price cuts expected any soon?
Also one more question, at the moment i am using a Thermaltake Toughpower 600w PSU, this particular PSU has 1x PCI-E 6-pin connector and 1 PCI-E 8-pin connector, there is a small adapter cable included to make a 6-pin out of the 8-pin.

I understood that the 7870 needs a minimum of 500w and two pci-e 6-pin connections, i am guessing my current PSU will work fine?

The 7870 shouldn't pull much more than 175W under full load. You will be way more than fine.

At full load a 5850 draws 158W and a 7870 draws 175W. You're good. thumb.gif
